Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS)

Upward Bound Math and Science, a college preparation program, was developed as a result of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Education. Through this program, Metropolitan Community College partners with Omaha Northwest High School to support their high school students.

Program Description

The Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating high school students. The services goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields and professions.

Program Details

Services:

  • Summer programs with intensive math and science training
  • Year-round counseling and advisement
  • Exposure to university faculty members who do research in mathematics and sciences
  • Computer training
  • Paricipant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduate students who are serving as mentors
  • Education or counseling services designed to improve the fiannceal and economic literacy of students

The programs and activities mentioned above are specifically designed for students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless, students who are in foster care or are aging out of foster care system or other disconnected students.

PROJECTS:

After School Tutoring and Mentoring Program

  • Tutorial services offered Monday through Thursday
  • Test preparation and study skills development
  • Individual and group academic and career advisement
  • Exposure to the range of career options especially those where program participants are under represented
  • One-on-one mentoring with a teacher/staff mentor

Grade-specific college preparatory seminars

  • Seminars are held once a month
  • Seminars are grade-specific and vary in topics that meet the interests and needs of all students
  • Seminars will be offered after school on a variety of days and times to meet the needs of all students
  • Students are required to attend their grade specific seminar each month

Exploratory seminars
In addition to the grade-specific college preparatory seminars, students are also required to attend one exploratory seminar each month. Seminars will be offered on a variety of days and times to meet the needs of all students. Students can elect to attend additional seminars, as desired.

  • Examples of seminars: ACT preparation, leadership council, book club, study skills, health careers, financial literacy, poetry and community service

Saturday College

  • The purpose of Saturday College is to bring the entire group of students together to share information, invite guest speakers, expose students to college-related themes and information and provide additional instruction in core curricular areas.
  • Saturday College is held quarterly. The exact date, time and location of each event will be announced and distributed in advance to students and parents.

Summer Academy

  • Instruction in core curriculum subjects: English literature and composition, science, science lab, mathematics and foreign language
  • Instruction in subjects outside the core curriculum which will introduce new subject matter thereby enhancing the student's experience.
  • Cultural, educational and recreational field trips that have as their purpose the intellectual, social and cultural development of our students.
  • Community service
  • End of summer overnight trip

Senior Bridge Program

  • Graduated seniors have the opportunity to take up to two college-level courses, live on campus and take college seminars in the summer between high school and their first semester of college.
  • The purpose of this program is to prepare and assist students in the transition from high school to college.
