Inaugural Metro Omaha Trades Invitational to test local high school, college students

OMAHA, Neb. — Metropolitan Community College will host the inaugural Metro Omaha Trades Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2, 8 a.m.-noon at three of its campus locations as well as the Omaha Career Center, 1502 Cuming St. More than 200 area high school and MCC students will display their trade skills in the competition, which will help determine who will advance to other competitions in the state of Nebraska.

“MCC and industry partners have teamed up to offer students a unique opportunity to showcase their talents in a setting where they’ll race against the clock and each other,” said Zach Pechacek, MCC SkillsUSA director and instructor. "Students will also have the chance to visit with local employers, alumni and instructors to discuss career opportunities.”

Students will compete in construction trades at the Construction Education Center and firefighting in the Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology at the Fort Omaha Campus, 32nd Street and Sorensen Parkway. The College’s South Omaha Campus, 2909 Ed Babe Gomez Ave., will host competitions in manufacturing. Automotive competitions will be held primarily at the MCC Applied Technology Center, 10407 State St. The Omaha Career Center will host student contests in audio/visual.

An awards ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. inside the Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology on the Fort Omaha Campus, 32nd Street and Sorensen Parkway. The event is sponsored by the MCC Foundation and platinum level sponsors Valmont Industries and Truck Center Companies.
