NEXUS Grant

The Internet of Things (IoT) is upon us. Companies seeking to advance efficiencies are increasingly connecting the Internet to their day-to-day production operations - known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The Metropolitan Community College (MCC) NEXUS project (DUE #1400557) focuses on the Intelligent Infrastructure for the Internet of Things (I4T), which encompasses the organizational framework, components, and processes of a digital manufacturing system that provides business intelligence to improve quality, safety, efficiency, productivity, and the business bottom line.

NEXUS Project Goals:

  1. Develop, pilot, refine, and deliver interdisciplinary team-based outreach and training on I4T systems for manufacturing
  2. Disseminate and provide support for expanded adoption of NEXUS models. Partners provide hardware (e.g., sensors and web-based dashboards) and the expertise to develop real life scenarios across four main topic areas:
    • Rapid Prototyping
    • Lean Production
    • Just-In-Time Inventory Management
    • Predictive Maintenance/Reduced Downtime

Workshops and Course Curricula:

Project NEXUS offers synchronous and asynchronous learning for youth, college students, and educators. Virtual simulations and content expose individuals to the premises of Lean Production, Predictive Maintenance, and Rapid Prototyping. . Individuals can participate in the Train-the-Trainer workshops to learn how to implement the trainings in existing classrooms or to facilitate the workshops.

Outcomes:

  1. Faculty and students acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to work in I4T, ultimately establishing a valuable pipeline of manufacturing technicians able to leverage technologies for competitive advantage.
  2. To address the manufacturing industry’s critical need for technicians prepared to work effectively in diverse, interdisciplinary teams, NEXUS engages women in IT-enabled industrial production pathways – a growing need in Nebraska and across the nation.
  3. To promote replication, costs of individual kits are kept reasonably low by intentionally using readily available materials.
