NON-CREDIT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Esta información esta disponible en Español

Non-credit ESL is offered quarterly through the Adult Basic Education Program and is intended for literacy level non-English speaking students. The English taught in non-credit ESL classes targets students who do not speak any English or speak English at a elementary school level. The classes focus on basic English skills and survival English skills. Students who can already communicate in English in their communities, should consider continuing to improve their English speaking and writing skills in CREDIT ESL CLASSES. These non-credit classes are available only to Nebraska residents. Child care is not available and children are not allowed in classes. Through generous support from the Nebraska Department of Education and private foundations these courses are offered free of charge.

TWO STEP ENROLLMENT PROCESS FOR NEW STUDENTS
Non-Credit ESL classes are offered during the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer quarters at Metropolitan Community College. Students should enroll in classes only if they can commit to attending the entire 11 week quarter. Classes are held at various locations throughout the metropolitan Omaha area. Additionally classes are offered at the Fremont Area Center in Fremont, NE. (To enroll in non-credit ESL classes in Fremont you must call 402-721-2507.)

For classes held in the Metropolitan Omaha area, new students must complete a TWO STEP enrollment process in order to attend a non-credit ESL class:

  1. The first step is to take the ORAL BEST Test.
  2. The second step is to attend an Orientation and Registration Session.

The enrollment process begins one month before the start of each new quarter. New students are tested on a Wednesday/Friday testing schedule throughout August, November, February and May. (See below to view the Quarter Calendar, ORAL BEST Testing Schedule and Orientation/Registration Schedule.

New students cannot attend class unless they have completed BOTH the ORAL BEST testing Session AND the Orientation and Registration Session.

ENROLLMENT PROCESS FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
The registration process for current students is conducted in the classroom by the instructor.  Normally this process will begin two weeks before the finish of the quarter. Returning students who have not attended classes in the last 90 days must call the Adult Basic Education office at 457-2312 to determine their registration process.
