Course Syllabus

(Updated 12/09/08)

At the beginning of every quarter, each faculty member will develop a course syllabus for each course they are teaching, using the determined course outline topics and objectives. Uniform information must be in all syllabi, but the order of the information and the cover page are left to the discretion of the instructor.

A syllabus must be given to the students at the first class meeting.

Preparing the Syllabus:

  • Review the College Calendar to check important dates such as holidays, staff development days and drop dates; include these dates and verify they are updated in your syllabi for each new quarter.
  • Attach an Important Dates Sheet for the quarter. The current quarter's Important Dates Sheet (PDF file) is available online by selecting Important Dates Sheet (PDF) or from the Dean's office. The Important Dates Sheet must be attached to each syllabus.
  • Include how and when a student may contact you (include your Metro email address, Metro voice number and hours available to meet with student outside of class.)
  • Include your attendance policy (such as, will you deduct points for ‘x’ number of absences or will students earn points for each day of attendance).
  • Include your grading policy. Refer to the Grading/Student Records page on this web site for more information.
  • State your policy regarding making up exams.
