Legal Studies Program Expands This Fall

gavel Preparing for a career in the legal community just got easier at Metropolitan Community College. Beginning this fall, MCC´s Associate Degree in Legal Studies will offer options in pre-law, legal administrative assistant and legal assistant to meet the needs of MCC´ students´ diverse interests in the legal community.

The pre-law option will prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions to complete a Bachelor´s Degree in Pre-Law. Already, a transfer agreement has been established with Bellevue University for seamless transition to their new pre-law program.

The legal administrative assistant option combines the strengths of two of MCC´s existing programs and meets the growing need for well-trained executive assistants, office supervisors and office staff in today´s legal office. In Nebraska, the median wage for legal administrative assistants is $32,951 per year (source: Nebraska Career Information System, 2008), and employment opportunities are significant statewide.

The legal assistant (paralegal) option provides a foundation in a variety of legal specialties for those seeking to perform substantive legal work such as drafting correspondence, pleadings, contracts and other legal documents as well as performing legal research. Legal assistants work under the direct supervision of a lawyer, and the median annual wage in Nebraska for a legal assistant in $39,013 with increasing job opportunities statewide (source: Nebraska Career Information System, 2008).

MCC´s Legal Studies Program is one of the few associate-level programs in the nation to be accredited by the American Bar Association.
