Summer Programs Give Taste of College

Spring 2010 | Archives

College 4 Kids student After 25 years, MCC´s affordable and fun summer programs continue to keep parents, children and teens coming back again and again.

"Once they find out about us and try it once, they usually come back year after year," said Tina Morgan, Community Education Coordinator for MCC.

College 4 Kids mixes fun and learning in classes that feature science experiments, cooking, dancing, math games or babysitting basics, among others. The College 4 Teens program, launched in 2007, offers older youth a peek at different careers with classes on interior design, creating a commercial, starting a business or honing computer skills.

Both programs give children ages 3–11 and youth ages 12–15 exposure to the lifelong educational opportunities that MCC offers. Registration for summer 2010 begins April 1.

Last year, the kids and teens programs enrolled about 3,000 students. Many of those are returning participants.

"I start getting calls in January wanting to know the dates and locations so [families] can plan other activities around the week they want to attend College 4 Kids," Morgan said.

Parents appreciate that MCC offers the classes at convenient locations throughout Omaha and the surrounding community, she said. While some classes are offered at MCC locations, others are offered at elementary schools in Omaha, Blair, Gretna and Bennington. Coordinators strive to keep costs low and pass the savings on to families.

By connecting children as young as 3 to an educational experience, MCC hopes to become their natural choice for continuing their education into adulthood.

"Learning can be fun, and it´s important that we provide that opportunity at an early age," Morgan said. "It will serve them well throughout their lives."
