Spring 2012 |
Newly elected Board of Governor chairman Dr. Steve Brock plans to shift the strategic focus of the board to include a greater examination of data on the topic of student learning.
"I'm looking to shift the emphasis from a review of operational items to shine a laser-like focus on academic success," Brock stated. "It's no longer enough to only applaud the increased rate of growth at Metropolitan Community College; we need to focus more attention on improving student success across all campuses and in all areas."
One of the linchpins in the board's strategic plan concerns a more expansive use of technology to support MCC's mission. Brock introduced the possibility of online textbooks for consideration. For many students, Brock said, "The textbook is more expensive than the class. If we can adjust the cost of the average textbook from $80 to $8, both the student and the area taxpayers win."
Brock is currently the chief education officer for Opportunity
Education, a foundation devoted to developing curriculum
and materials for poor students in Africa and Asia.
