Nursing textbook donation supports Tanzania school

Spring 2013 | Archives

The efforts of one MCC instructor will help nursing students in Tanzania be better prepared to care for those in need of healing.

Nancy Pares, director of nursing, responded to Alegent Creighton Health's call for textbooks to support a new school of nursing in the Machame region of Tanzania, near the base of Mt. Kilamanjaro. Pares realized MCC had about 150 used textbooks that would be a valuable resource in a place where students typically must share resources. "When I saw the school needed textbooks, I thought it would a perfect way to utilize these textbooks and support Alegent Creighton Health," she said. The gift also provided a way to thank Alegent Creighton Health for supporting MCC by providing sites for nursing clinicals.

Alegent Creighton Health's efforts in Tanzania include the development of a hospital and multiple dispensaries in addition to the school of nursing. Increasing the number of trained nurses has a big health benefit, as Tanzania has only one nurse for every 2,500 people, said Lisa Kelly, mission integration consultant for Alegent Creighton Health. "We are eager to furnish nursing students with the textbooks and supplies they need to have the best nursing education possible," she said. "The donation of textbooks from MCC will provide those nursing students with the most current nursing knowledge possible, a rarity in a place that still has minimal access to the Internet or other resources from the Western world."
