Winter 2011 |
In the summer of 2010, a miracle seemed out of reach for the family of Brandon Thomas, a student
at MCC's Institute for the Culinary Arts who was just a few credits shy of graduating when he was
fatally injured in a motorcycle accident on his way home from school.
As they struggled with this painful chapter in their lives, Brandon's family sought ways to honor
his memory, to capture his spirit and share it with others.
When Brandon's mother, Andie Gordman, approached a few of Brandon's instructors at the ICA to
discuss a possible project, they were quick to get on board—Brandon had been part of their
family, too. Working together, the Gordman family, along with the staff and students of the ICA,
developed Season with Sage, a cookbook in Brandon's honor.
But this was no ordinary cookbook project. This was a wellspring of miracles.
While a team of Brandon's classmates developed and tested recipes, another photographed their
work. While one worked on writing copy, another MCC class planned for marketing and distribution. And
while MCC students gained valuable skills as they honored their friend, Brandon's family shared their
expertise and generously underwrote the entire project, so all proceeds could go to the Brandon
Michael Thomas Culinary Arts Memorial Scholarship Fund at the MCC Foundation. The MCC Foundation
nurtures meaningful relationships between the College and community partners, like the Gordman
family. Find out more and make a donation at www.mccneb.edu/waystogive.
