Metro Catalog 1010

The college catalog is a wonderful resource; however, so much information at once can seem confusing.  Here’s a little information on how the catalog is organized to make it easier to use.

Where do you go when you need that class your friends told you they were taking?  What’s that prerequisite course for College Algebra?  Since the catalog has General Education courses, should I take those before taking my Major Requirements?  You will find these and other answers below.

General Education Requirements
All programs of study have General Education Requirements dedicated to educating the whole person.  These courses broaden opportunities and enrich perspectives by preparing students for the ever-changing world outside the classroom.
Catalog Editions
A student who does not complete program requirements within four years is subject to the current catalog or any preceding catalog within four years if he/she attended during that catalog year.
Major Requirements
Associate Degrees and Certificates require completion of a specific set of courses designated as Major Requirements. These courses give students career skills or prepare students for transfer to other institutions.

* Since some major requirement courses are offered once or twice a year, students should feel free to combine some general education courses with their Major Requirements to ensure timely graduation.
Prerequisites
Many general educationand major requirements have pre-requisites which are courses that must be successfully completed prior to enrollment in the course.
Course Descriptions
The course description provides a brief summary of the class. Many course prerequisites are listed at the beginning of the course description.
Developmental Classes and Basic Skills Assessment
Good English, math, reading, and science skills are essential to success at MCC. New students to MCC are expected to take the College’s basic skills assessment in order to assist counselors and advisors to determine readiness for college-level coursework.

Students who are not yet ready to begin college-level courses should (or must) complete courses in Developmental Education classes in order to review or re-learn the academic skills necessary to succeed in college-level coursework.

The classes below in BOLD are the first possible developmental courses Metropolitan Community College offers. In many cases, these courses are needed before students can register for the 1000-level courses in their particular program. For example: If a student needs MATH 1310 and tested into MATH 0910, he/she would need to take MATH 0910, MATH 0920 and MATH 0921 or MATH 0960, before taking MATH 1310. If a student needed SOCI 1010 and tested into the RDLS 0100 area in Reading, he/she would need to take RDLS 0100 before SOCI 1010 to satisfy the reading prerequisite. The math, reading, English, and science areas are listed here for your use.
