Imagine strolling on a canal, surrounded by an authentic Dutch windmill, a drawbridge and stately old buildings. It's a scene right out of Amsterdam right? Actually, Pella, Iowa is the destination of our trip! Pella is the home of the largest operating Dutch windmill in the United States. A delicious Dutch dinner at Central College (founded in 1853) of Pella will be awaiting us upon arrival. The buffet dinner will be Dutch spiced beef, baked chicken breast, hut spot (mashed potatoes w/ diced carrots), snibontjes (green beans w/ bacon), rode kool (red cabbage), Dutch lettuce (sweet & sour dressing), rolls (from flour ground in the Dutch Mill), Dutch apple cake w/ pecan caramel sauce and drinks.all served on china & linens. Then it's on to downtown Pella for on-your-own time to discover the many historical, garden and shopping treasures. There should be gorgeous tulips at Scholte House, Sunken Gardens and Central Park. The Historical Village option offers a guided tour of the 130 foot Vermeer windmill! At the quaint 22 building Village, walk amid Pella's famous tulip beds, see the home of Wyatt Earp, a wooden shoe shop, and grist mill. View the sites we'll visit at www.pella.org. The bus will drop off at the Historical Village/ Vermeer Mill. Another option is on-your-own shopping at the best Iowa specialty shops; like Brown's Shoe Fit Co, Boats Home Furnishings, and Work of Our Hands, fair trade items handcrafted by artisans in developing countries. Browse, Van Den Berg's, Best of Thymes, Van Veen Chocolates. There are two Dutch bakeries and Ulrich's famous Pella bologna, house cured meats and gourmet cheeses. Optional stops (on your free time) might include the Pella Opera House (self-guided) and the Scholte House mansion. The opera house was beautifully renovated in 1990. The Scholte House is the mansion of Pella founder, Dominic Scholte. A self guided tour is an option, not included in tuition. There will be a side trip to Tassel Ridge Winery, known for numerous awards. An optional $5.00 guided tour of the winery will include the history of the vineyards in Iowa, info on local grape varieties. In the winery, we may even catch a glimpse of a winemaker crafting wines. Tassel Ridge offers 33 varieties of wine and 11 varieties of grapes. Some red wines to taste include Iowa St. Croix and a white wine to try is Iowa Edelweiss. Another stop, Frisian Farms, where small batch gouda cheese is the Bandstra brothers speciality. Dutch Farmstead gouda is one of the best-kept secrets of cheese connoisseurs. For Mother's Day, take Mom on this unique trip to Pella. Tour price includes the Dutch dinner/private dining. Please bring $9 for the Historical Village/Vermeer windmill guided tour. If you want to tour the Scholte House too, please bring $12. You will pay individually for your preference of tours. Our deluxe motor coach departs promptly at 7:30a.m. from Metro's Sarpy Center, (meet the bus at the northeast parking lot). Return at approximately 10:00p.m. Tour leader is Lynnette Staroska.
