A backwards little town in the mountains of the American Southwest, in the recent present. Ghosts and monsters and foul-mouthed Biblical figures nurture the dying embers of a family with a dangerous secret--or is it just that Uncle Gene is delusional and the creepy homeless people at Dunkin Donuts bear an odd resemblance to the parents of Jesus? Mari never asked to inherit all this chaos, but when her grandma writes an inconvenient will, she must confront her own past and the tangled reality of her family’s identity.
