GREAT PLAINS THEATRE CONFERENCE
For eight years, the nationally recognized GPTC, presented by Metropolitan Community College, has offered significant opportunities for new and emerging playwrights to learn and grow, no matter the level of experience in theatre. Although the Conference focus is primarily on playwriting, the GPTC also benefits performers, designers, directors, technicians and scholars. Artists connect with one another in a supportive and encouraging environment, critique one another’s work, begin to develop work together, form future creative alliances and share vital contacts and resources, both regionally and nationally. Relationships cultivated at GPTC continue year-round through social media, planned events and other avenues of creativity and collaboration.
The GPTC provides opportunities for participants to interact with and have their work seen by a host of national theatre professionals and scholars. Theatre WorkShops, Luncheon Panels and daily PlayLab and MainStage Series readings comprise the foundation of the Conference. The PlayFest presents an opportunity for playwrights, participants and the general public to enjoy featured work by many of the GPTC guest artists. The 2014 Conference will also offer The Design Wing and The Dramatugical Wing.

The Conference is a powerful combination of training, performances and community building making it one of the top gatherings in the country for playwrights, actors and new theatre enthusiasts.

The GPTC also invites a multitude of other featured artists whose works are often read or performed at scheduled or impromptu times throughout the Conference week. These individuals also act as panelists, respondents and workshop instructors for the GPTC.
The GPTC utilizes the talents of over two hundred local and national theatre artists each year, including actors, directors, designers, and technical personnel. Since it began in 2006, theatre companies across the country have included works in their main-stage seasons that they discovered at the GPTC.
The PlayLabs are the heart of the Conference. The playwrights travel to Omaha and immerse themselves in theatre for seven days by taking master classes, attending readings and performances and interacting with theatre scholars, practitioners and a plethora of other theatre artists. Each play is read in an open-to-the-public format with panelists providing constructive critiques of the new playwright’s work afterwards.
The MainStage Series features the top five plays submitted to the Conference. The playwrights receive special recognition, travel, lodging and an honorarium for this honor. Throughout the Conference these plays receive dedicated readings critiques by the GPTC Honored and Featured playwrights.
The WorkShops are hands-on master classes for playwrights, performers, directors and the general public. They are led by some of America’s top theatre academics and playwrights.
The PlaySlam, which takes place on the final day of the Conference, creates a high energy, mini-festival of short works written throughout the week inspired by the Theatre Workshop, other playwrights, talkbacks and readings.
The Design Wing is a week-long creation and training program grouping five top emerging designers with Justin Townsend, one of the country’s top design artists.
The Dramaturgical Wing invites three of the country’s top dramaturges to join Conference activities, providing one-on-one time for playwrights to meet and work with them.
