Assessment

If English is the student's primary language, the Testing Center staff will administer the COMPASS or ASSET assessment.  Students that have taken the ACT and SAT exams within the last two years can also submit those scores to Metro for placement (see note below).

If English is the student’s second language, s/he must meet with an advisor or counselor in Student Services before testing. The advisor/counselor will then determine which assessment the individual will take.  The Michigan is paper/pencil and is timed.  The ESL COMPASS is computerized and there is no time limit.  Practice software for the ESL COMPASS is available in the Academic Resource Center.

Compass Tips and Advising Notes

Students who have completed the ACT within two years may not need to complete the Assessment Testing if:

  • The math score was 21 or higher
  • The English score was 18 or higher
  • The reading score was 18 or higher
  • The science score was 18 or higher

Bring your ACT scores with you when you meet with the Academic Advisor, or request a copy of your test report be sent to Metro's Testing Center.

Assessment Testing - COMPASS and ASSET

Students participate in basic skills testing in reading, English, science and mathematics. Results of testing are provided to new students when they are counseled and advised for their first quarter of classes. A basic skills testing program is available on each campus as a part of the College's Student Services. There is no charge for this test which lasts about 2 1/2 hours.

Students planning on entering any of Metro's health career programs who have not completed college-level course work in the assessment areas must complete the assessment testing for reading, English, mathematics and science.

Many of the pre-entrance and program courses contain assessment testing as a prerequisite. If developmental course work is indicated, students should complete the courses indicated to prepare for the pre-entrance program courses. Strong foundation skills are essential to success in any health career program.

Students should work with an academic advisor for registration and course selection assistance

Prepare for the assessment!

Visit with an Academic Advisor or Counselor to discuss Assessment Testing. The Compass Student Guide is available at Student Services and at the Testing Center. Students can review basic math, English and reading skills in the Academic Resource Center and Math Center. There are practice sample materials at www.act.org/compass/sample.
