Notice to Staff: Summer Hours Program

The summer hours program is designed to meet student and community needs while providing flexibility in summer work schedules.

Summer hours for designated personnel will begin the week of June 2-6 and will extend through the week of August 18-22. During this period, the College will be open on Friday afternoons.  Office and department unit coverage is essential - phones need to be answered and walk-in traffic served. However, the manner in which this coverage is provided will be up to each office/department. Employees are asked to cooperate with one another to provide Friday afternoon coverage and to partner as needed with other departments to assist in providing regular services.

Note: Employees covered by collective bargaining agreements may not be subject to the summer hour provisions as described in this article. Please reference the specific agreement and consult with supervisors prior to making any change in schedule.

Criteria used to establish work schedules:

  • All offices and work sites must be covered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Some departments will need to stay open longer, begin operations earlier or work weekends in order to meet College and/or student needs.
  • The number of staff needed in each area will vary based on the type of services provided, the anticipated volume of walk-in traffic, appointments and the need to complete various College projects.
  • Those hourly employees scheduled to work on Friday afternoon will work a regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday schedule (or some variation thereof).
  • Those employees not scheduled to work on Friday afternoon can work four nine-hour days (Monday-Thursday) and a four-hour day on Friday. Beginning and ending times can be adjusted to accommodate either a half-hour or full-hour lunch break.
  • Based on the College's need to include evening and weekend services and to provide coverage and support services not always achievable using the above options, supervisors may consider other schedules outlined in Procedures Memorandum VI-20, Flexible Work Schedules.

MCC Cares Continues Service Learning Efforts

This spring, MCC Cares Service Learning project will have adapted at least five area homes, contributing more than 500 hours of labor and saving residents an estimated $18,000 in construction costs.

"The home repair class is a recognized opportunity for MCC's trade students and SkillsUSA members to use their construction skills in real-world situations that benefit people in need," said Home Repairs instructor Dave Horst. It is the third year for the project, and the SkillsUSA Lowe's Community Service Grant was awarded to MCC's SkillsUSA chapter to help fund the project this year.

This year's accessibility-focused project continues an established partnership between MCC and the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (ENOA), through which MCC students repair or improve the homes of area low-income senior citizens in the course of one academic quarter. Past projects have repaired hazardous decks, restored bathrooms and fixed dangerous porch stairs. This year students focused on a series of projects that enable ENOA residents with physical disabilities to better access their homes and, as a result, maintain their independence.

A celebration luncheon on May 21 at the South Omaha Campus Conference Center will honor all of those affiliated with MCC Cares and the life-changing work they accomplish in the community.

Tractor Sculpture Revs Up Elkhorn Valley Campus

Students going to class and voters going to the polling booths enjoyed a little whimsical humor as they entered the Elkhorn Valley Campus building on Tuesday, May 13. Everyone was greeted by a small John Deere tractor (courtesy of the maintenance department) wrapped with a huge bandanna made from 42 colorful bandannas tied together. A cowboy hat hung from the exhaust pipe, and Kenny Chesney's song She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy played from the cab of the tractor. The construction installation was created by Judi Cross, a student in Jamie Burmeister's sculpture class.

"It was a fun installation to create and watch people as they walked by," Cross said.
