2011 Implementation Plan

Following the completion of the 2010 master Plan Update for Campuses and Centers (Master Plan Update) Metropolitan Community College directed the development of this Implementation Plan for the Elkhorn Valley and Fort Omaha Campuses. In addition to specific recommendations for Elkhorn Valley and Fort Omaha, the Implementation Plan accounts for Master Plan Update recommendations at all campuses and centers, including the Sarpy Center, Applied Technology Center, South Omaha campus, and the Fremont Area Center.

Several recurring themes are imbedded in the specific initiatives articulated as priorities at the Elkhorn Valley and Fort Omaha Campuses:

  • Encourage community access to campus
  • Create a sense of community on campus (indoor and out)
  • Improve outdoor recreation/gathering spaces (with access to art)
  • Improve student spaces (including exercise, health/fitness, meeting rooms, conversation, informal learning, socialization, computer labs, seating)
  • Improve public transportation options
  • Provide opportunities for improved faculty and student interaction
  • Develop a learning commons model (including reading, writing, math center support services and library)
  • Provide additional "flexible" space (including training, exhibition, career fairs, visible, soft space, flexible classrooms and meeting rooms)

The following items were recommended in the Implementation Plan and have been completed:

  • Renovate the library at the Elkhorn Valley Campus
  • Deferred maintenance projects including new roof and mechanical equipment at Elkhorn Valley Campus.
  • Provide additional parking resources to serve enrollment increases at Elkhorn Valley Campus

The following items were recommended in the Implementation Plan and Master Plan Update and are currently being studied for future work:

  • Construct a new classroom and Art building to alleviate the immediate and projected shortfall of academic space on the Elkhorn Valley Campus
  • Renovate the space vacated by Art and HVAC programs for additional classroom and office space
  • Construct a new classroom building to alleviate projected shortfall of academic space and shift classes to the south side of the Fort Omaha Campus
  • Construct an Advanced Technology building on the south side of the Fort Omaha Campus
  • Replace incandescent fixtures with compact fluorescent or more efficient LED light fixtures
  • Migrate Construction and related Applied Technology offerings to the Fort Omaha Campus
