Pulitzer prize-winning author and journalist Sonia Nazario, a presenter in Metro's Diversity Matters Film and Lecture Series, discusses the dangerous journeys migrants undertake to enter the United States.

She details the odyssey of Enrique and his travels from Honduras to the U.S to reunite with his mother. His journey is not unique as many migrant mothers come to America to find work and earn money in order to bring their families to join them.

The show features MCC chef and instructor Oystein Solberg prepping and plating meals made with an array of local ingredients. Episodes are filmed in the Metropolitan Utilities District culinary theatre at MCC's Institute for the Culinary Arts.

Emcee for the 22nd Annual Fort Omaha Intertribal Powwow and presenter in Metro's Diversity Matters Film and Lecture Series, Garan Coons discusses his background as an Oglala Lakota Navajo Native American.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised Winnebago Ho-Chunk, Garan Coons studies Native American customs at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Founder of the Many Moccasins Dance Troupe he is renowned as a professional singer, dancer, and storyteller, illustrating Native American culture to international audiences.

James Cloyd, Executive Director-MCC's Applied Technology Center and Tom Reinhart, School Counselor-Boys Town discuss the partnership between Metropolitan Community College and Boys Town which provides Boys Town students training in the trades. Boys Town students can enroll in courses from MCC's Utility Line, Commercial Driver's License, and Fire Science programs. Students obtain dual enrollment and attend classes at MCC's Elkhorn Valley Campus, South Omaha Campus and Applied Technology Center.

Math, Your Way

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: Marcia Vergo

Math instructor Marcia Vergo explains Metro's unique competency based modular method of teaching math.

Modularization includes three groups of ten math modules. The first group covers basic college math, the second, elementary algebra and the third, intermediate algebra. Students are placed in the module best suited to their background. Instructors provide oversight and encouragement, making sure students are on-task to complete courses on time. Students and instructors are embracing the concept, and other program areas may adopt this teaching strategy.


9:30 PMMCC’s Design, Interactivity and Media Arts Program

Tom McDonnell, Dean of Humanities and Visual Arts discusses MCC's exciting new Design, Interactivity and Media Arts program, DIMA. This program was offered for the first time in the fall quarter 2013 with emphasis on creative thinking and design principles with visual, technical and artistic skills students can choose from among eight majors. Included are: Graphic Design, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Illustration, Media Generalist, Motion Graphics, Web Design and DIMA Entrepreneur.

Steve Warren Founder and CEO and Daniel Boyd, Program coordinator and COO discuss their youth oriented non-profit organizations. Developing Relationships through Education, Athletics and Mentoring is the mission of D.R.E.A.M. and the Warren Academy.  

By providing positive role models, invaluable life experiences, and ongoing support and assistance, NFL veteran Steve Warren and a staff of volunteers are dedicated to making a difference for at-risk youth.
