Black Eagle, Dr. King’s Dream

Host: Kent Pavelka Guest: Shawn Hamilton 

Houston Texas native and Minneapolis-based actor Shawn Hamilton discusses his one man performance, Black Eagle, Dr. King’s Dream.

Shawn Hamilton discusses his portrayal of Dr. Ronald McNair, America’s first African-American astronaut, the Black Eagle. Tragically killed in the disintegration of the Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986, Shawn performs an interpretation of Dr. McNair recounting his inspiring journey from a segregated South Carolina town to the ranks of the elite space program.

Shawn also performs a character portrayal of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King engaging an audience to embrace his ideals of determination, acceptance and brotherhood.

This dynamic story is presented by the regional touring company of Mixed Blood Theatre from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Michelle Zych, Executive Director explains the goal of the Omaha Women's Fund is to enable women to achieve full partnership in the Omaha community. She explains that women are still at a disadvantage in the workplace, housing, financial literacy, economic self-sufficiency and domestic violence. The core effort of the Women's Fund is research to identify solutions and lead change on behalf of women and girls.

Through its Bridges to Opportunity Program, Leadership Academy, victim support groups, classes and outreach, the Women's Center helps build and maintain strong families, decrease dependence on social services and build basic skills for stable employment.

Peter explains how iPads and interactive displays improve the teaching environment and learning experience. He demonstrates iPad apps used by instructors and students and emphasizes how iPads better prepare students for the working environment.

He discusses the serendipitous no-cost national branding and marketing of “Omaha!” by Denver Broncos football quarterback Payton Manning.

Showing several video clips of Manning’s quarterback cadence of “Omaha!” and the good natured fun of local and Denver chambers of commerce David explains the unforeseen positive metrics and advertising benefits from Peyton Manning’s use of “Omaha!”

David explains planned chamber activities through the first half of 2014, and appeal of Omaha to nationally known companies.

MCC’s Disability Support Services and Universal Ac

Host: Kent Pavelka Guests: Deb Eppenbaugh, M.S., LMHP,  Melinda J. Classen, M.S.

Deb Eppenbaugh, M.S., LMHP, Interim Executive Director, Applied Technology Center, and Melinda Classen, M.S., Disability Support Services Coordinator, discuss the role of Disability Support Services (DSS).

Serving over 1,700 students in 2012, DSS started in 1976 as Special Support Services changing its name to Disability Support Services in 1980. Deb and Melinda cover the range of services provided to special needs students; define disabilities, "reasonable accommodations," and important aspects of the Federal Educational Rights Act and its impact on teachers, students, and parents.

They explain how early interaction with high schools helps ensure a smooth high school-to-college transition for students. They also discuss the importance of "universal access" for students' success.

As a full service restaurant serving breakfast and lunch daily when culinary classes are in session, the Sage Student Bistro gives students real-world, hands on experience in a fully operational restaurant. Rotating among positions including table service, food preparation, cashiering and cleaning, MCC culinary students experience all aspects of operating a restaurant.

Food preparation and food service management classes leverage the features of the Sage Student Bistro, including a full five course dinner offered on a reservation basis to the public.

Kathryn Halverson-Rigatuso and Jayme Hinds, MCC Early Childhood Education Instructors, discuss the college’s dynamic growth of this important program. Kathryn and Jayme explain that early childhood education is more encompassing than just teaching small children, it's also understanding and caring for their emotional needs and well being. They also discussed MCC’s relationship with the Learning Community of Omaha.
