Student Veterans Work to Restore Homes in North Omaha

On November 16th, 2013 more than 40 student veteran volunteers worked together to build and restore homes of poverty-stricken families in North Omaha for Habitat for Humanity. The event was a collaborative effort among veterans attending Metropolitan Community College, University of Nebraska-Omaha, and Bellevue University.  Students  from each school worked on six homes at two locations and completed duties such as framing windows, painting, preparing siding, roofing and general construction.

Current MCC Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter president Matthew Lair was one of the several veteran participants from MCC. “It felt great to give back. As veterans, we understand the importance of service and it was really nice to see so many veterans get together for a good cause.” In addition, Lair expressed how it valuable it was to network with other veterans from local SVA chapters and hopes that the schools can collaborate again on future projects.

MCC Attends 1st Annual SVA Nebraska Leadership Conference

The MCC Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter recently attended at the 1st Annual SVA Nebraska Leadership Conference held on March 23rd, 2012 at Bellevue University. Also in attendance from MCC was Bobby Loud, former director of Military and Veteran Support Services (MVSS) and Gary Sparks, IT faculty member.

SVA chapters throughout the State of Nebraska participated at the Conference, each having an opportunity to share their upcoming projects and events. The event featured a series of speakers from U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA), Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska and the Nebraska Army National Guard. The speakers covered topics such as applying for VA benefits, current volunteer opportunities, suicide prevention and available resources. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and collaborate with chapters on upcoming

events and ideas, such as a SVA end of year barbeque.

MCC’s SVA President, Matthew Stevens said of the Conference, “it was a great opportunity to meet students from other schools with the same passion and desire to help their fellow student veterans. Overall, I found it to be a very fulfilling and worthwhile event.”
