Type of Housing Offered: Residential pregnancy center, maternity home for women 19 and older.

House Rules And Requirements:

  • 1. Must be 19 years of age
  • 2. Must show a health care provider’s proof of pregnancy
  • 3. Must be drug/alcohol free
  • 4. Must have alternate housing for any other
  • children they may have, due to lack of space.
  • 5. Must sign our residential handbook agreement
  • 6. Must abide by all the rules and regulations set forth by the Bethlehem House.

Capacity: How Many Rooms/Beds Are There?: Bethlehem House is an 11-bedroom home equipped to meet each woman’s needs throughout her pregnancy journey. A woman can reside at the center up to six weeks after the birth of her baby. Each woman has a private bedroom with a sink. There are laundry facilities in the basement of the center. We also have a kitchen at the center where the women take turns planning and preparing evening meals.

How Long Can I Stay?: A woman can reside at the center up to six weeks after the birth of her baby.

Additonal Details: While at the center, the women attend parenting classes that are offered on site. They also participate in a six part video series based on Dr. Robert Spitzer’s model of “four levels of happiness”. The women meet with the family life director monthly and create a service plan. This is to assist them in focusing on goals and coming up with a plan to achieve their identified goals.

Staffed 24 hours per day. We are a member of the National Domestic Violence hotline and serve domestic/sexual violence victims of Omaha, the surrounding area, and across the nation, day and night.

Type of Housing Offered: Emergency shelter services for victims of domestic violence.

Services: Clothing, Education, Food, Housing, Life Skills, Support Groups, and Transportation. We provide a wide variety of referrals to meet the needs of a wide variety of victims of violence. In terms of referrals we access many of the options listed above.

House Rules And Requirements: Must be a victim of domestic/sexual violence and have reached the age of majority, 19 years. The client may bring in her children up to the age of majority. If the client has a child that is handicapped and over the age of majority that would not exclude her from services.

We strive to meet the individual needs of each client/family. The Shelter is a safe place for victims of violence. Safety is the foundation for the services that are provided.

Clients gather at one point in the morning to review the needs of the house and they determine the ongoing chore list and determine how the tasks are shared by the residential community. Each client uses resources that are availible at the shelter to provide meals for herself and her children. Clients are asked to pick up after themselves and their children.

Groups are offered but are not mandantory. Childcare is provided if the client is in group.

Staff meet with the client in a one-on-one setting to assist the client in their next step.

Steps/Joining Process: Must be a victim of domestic/sexual violence, and call (402) 558-5700. There is a screening process involved in order to best help the caller. Depending on the situation, secure potential resources can be provided to best meet the presenting circumstance.

Capacity: How Many Rooms/Beds Are There?: We have seven bedrooms to house clients. Six of the bedrooms are for women and their children. One of the seven bedrooms houses four single women.

Families do not share a bedroom with single women or with other families.

We can house up to ten clients, six in the family bedrooms and four in the single room. The number of children vary by the size of the clients family.

The kitchen is shared by the community as are the bathrooms and living room. There is no wait list. Potential clients are encourged to call for openings, if we do not have an opening, referrals are given.

If the caller determines that there is a need, we will develop a safety plan with her so that she may enhance her safety until she can change her living circumstances. This too may involve referrals to other agencies in the community.

How Long Can I Stay?: Six weeks.

Faith-based?: Catholic Charities as an agency is faith-based. However, services are provided for victims reguardless of faith affiliation or lack thereof.

Additonal Details: Our goal is to provide safety, support, education, and referrals to victims of domestic violence.

We have a reintegration advocate that specifically works with the barriers that the client may have. In this effort we work with many programs in the community to secure housing for each client when the circumstances are present. For many, housing independence is achieved in a progression of steps.

We also provide ongoing support, education, and referrals with our community support advocate. This staff person works with clients once they have left the shelter to provide seamless support once she has left the program. The community support advocate will visit a client in her home, or a safe place.

We are the only emergency domestic violence shelter in Douglas County. We have 35 years of experience, training, and knowledge in meeting this need.

The Shelter is a member of the Nebraska Domestic Violence Sexual Assualt Coalition (NDVSAC) which serves as a safety net for victims of domestic/sexual violence across the state of Nebraska. NDVSAC also maintains a set of service standards for clients to ensure best service and consistent standards across the State of Nebraska for victims of domestic/sexual violence.

Type of Housing Offered: Emergency and Transitional Housing for women and children fleeing a Domestic Violence situation.

House Rules And Requirements: Residents receive the house guidelines upon intake. Rules include, but are not limited, to the following: We do not allow alcohol or drug use, any kind of violence, or any kind of racial comments or actions. Since we are a safe house, the location of our building can not be disclosed to anyone and confidentiality is essential for the safety of staff and residents.

Cost:  What is Included? Free

Steps/Joining Process: Call the crisis line and complete an intake.

Capacity: How Many Rooms/Beds Are There?: We can house 20 women and children in any combination. Availability changes daily. We do not have a wait list.

How Long Can I Stay?: Emergency stay is on a case by case basis. If accepted into our Transitional Program, the stay can be up to 2 years.

Type of Housing Offered: low income housing for seniors 62 years and older.

Cost?  What is Included?: Security deposit is the same amount as the rent. Rent is based on income, assets, and medical expenses and will be between 10 - 30 percent of gross income. Utilites except for cable and phone are included in the rent.

Steps/Joining Process: Request an application, complete all paperwork, and sign. Turn into the business office. At time of receipt of completed/signed application, person goes on the waiting list. When name nears the top of the list and there is an opening, the applicant is mailed a letter requesting an appointment. At this time an interview is conducted and necessary documentation collected and signed. If approved, move-in is scheduled. See tenant selection plan for full details on process.

Capacity: How Many Rooms/Beds Are There?: 47 one bedroom apartments. Short waitlist at this time.

How Long Can I Stay?: This is apartment living. As long as rent is paid and resident is in compliance with their lease the resident can stay as long as they choose.

Does my criminal record effect my eligibility?: tenant selection plan is available for any who want to apply.

Faith-based?: We are managed by The Salvation Army. There is a senior center on site where they offer some non-denominational bible studies and prayer groups. People living in the apartments are free to participate in any faith they choose.

Additonal Details: we are pet friendly and do allow small pets. Pet rules are available to applicants.

Type of Housing Offered: Transitional and permanent supportive housing provide long-term stability for homeless families. Heartland Family Service has significantly expanded its services to this population over the last few years in order to meet community needs.

Cost?  What is Included?: Services are free, but clients must pay rent. Rent is subsidized based on income.

Additonal Details: Heartland Housing Solutions (Douglas and Sarpy Counties):

Heartland Housing Solutions is a scattered-site Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program for single women and families with children who are currently homeless. The purpose of this program is to assist low-income families to gain permanent housing and become independent. At the same time, case management, financial counseling, therapeutic services and rental assistance are provided to help strengthen the family’s success. Does My Criminal Record Impact My Eligibility?: There will be a screening for the National Sex Offender Registry to determine whether you can stay at the Micah House.

Additonal Details: Shelter for families, couples, and individuals. There is usually a waiting list, especially for those seeking individual housing.

The Micah House provides 3 meals and 2 snacks per day.

  • THRU - Transitional Housing, 18 months
  • Scattered Site and Harrington Homes - Transitional Housing. 24 months
  • HOME Program - permanent supportive housing.

House Rules And Requirements: No drugs/alcohol use, abide by visitor policy, school age children must be attending school, children under 16 may not be left alone in apartment/house, no smoking in the apartment/house, program participants must be engaged in a full time activity (school, job, day program, etc.), must agree to participate in case management, attend required meetings and keep apartment/house clean.

Cost: 30% of adjusted gross income is paid as rent for all the programs.

Steps/Joining Process: An application must be completed by applicant, which includes a section completed by a referral source. After receiving a complete application, applicants wil meet with intake case manager to complete a psych-social. Applicant attends Housing Program's Intake meeting. Applicant is accepted or denied.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
be homeless
be at least 19 years of age
have 30 consecutive days of sobriety and mental health stability.

The HOME Program is a little different:
Applicant must be homeless and come from living on the streets or from a shelter. Can be referred from a transitonal housing program if the applicant came from the streets or a shelter prior to the transitional housing program.
Applicants do not need to have 30 days of mental health stability or sobriety, as long as they agree to work on the issues.

 

Capacity: THRU has 10, 2-bedroom apartments, Since it's an 18 month program we don't run a waiting list.
Scattered Site/Harrington Homes - 16, 2 or 3 bedroom single family homes in the Omaha community. No waiting list is kept.
HOME - 10 units utilizing community landlords. No waiting list is kept.

  • THRU - 18 months
