Patti Clayton Workshop* For Faculty
Friday, April 23rd, 2010
9:00am-2:00pm
FOC Building 7
On Critical Relfection and Higher Order Reasoning
"Reflection is the element of service-learning that helps students avoid “having the experience but missing meaning” and that improves the quality of learning and of service. When understood as critical reflection, intentionally designed in light of learning objectives, and integrated with assessment, it generates, deepens, and documents learning. This interactive, hands-on workshop will guide participants through a process of (1) articulating learning goals and objectives, (2) designing critical reflection accordingly, and (3) integrating critical reflection with formative and summative assessment of learning.
Participants will leave the session with examples, research-grounded models, and tools to support their own design of reflection assignments and rubrics."--Patti Clayton

Patti H. Clayton, Ph.D., is an independent consultant (PHC Ventures: www.curricularengagement.com), a Senior Scholar with the Center for Service and Learning at IUPUI, and a Visiting Fellow with the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE). She was previously founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement at NC State University. Clayton co-developed the DEAL Model for critical reflection and assessment and models for student leadership, faculty development, curriculum development, and institutionalization. Her work focuses on building the capacity of individuals, institutions, and the field as a whole for scholarly and democratic community-engaged teaching and learning.
