Each year the Great Plains Theatre Conference honors an established playwright. This year,
Doug Wright will receive the
Great Plains Playwright Award.
Doug has won numerous awards during his career both as a playwright
and as a screenplay writer. Among his works are I Am My Own Wife (Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award),
Quills (OBIE Award), Grey Gardens and the stage adaptation of The Little Mermaid
currently on stage.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the third annual Great Plains Theatre Conference. Metropolitan Community College is pleased to host this event not only to enhance the appreciation and knowledge of theatre, but also to provide a quality arts event for Nebraskans. The Conference celebrates the coming together of playwrights and theatre enthusiasts from across the country. We extend our affection and special gratitude to all of those that share the vision and make this event possible. Those include the playwrights, readers, directors, panelists, benefactors, guest artists and the amazing staff of MCC.
This is my 27th year of hosting a theatre conference (William Inge Festival 1981–1992, Last Frontier Theatre Conference 1992–2005, GPTC 2005–present) and my 20th year as a community college president. I am going to retire as president of MCC this July 1st. Although I will be retiring as president, I have contracted to continue to oversee the Great Plains Theatre Conference in the coming years and look forward to continuing my association with MCC.
I extend my sincerest congratulations to Peter Ellenstein who continues to make the William Inge Festival one of the oldest, premiere theatre events in the nation and to Dawson Moore who has continued the mission of the Last Frontier Theatre Conference. I send my love and congratulations to Edward Albee on his four productions that have been staged this year, which included three premieres. Edward had his 80th birthday on March 12th and has an opening night of The Occupant at Signature Theatre May 28. All of us at the GPTC extend our sincerest love, congratulations and happy 80th birthday to Edward.
Special appreciation is extended to Doug Wright who has allowed us to honor his great work this year and also to our benefactors, without whom this event would not be possible. Enjoy the Conference experience at Metropolitan Community College´s historic Fort Omaha Campus and in the greater Omaha area!
