We are looking for talented actors and directors interested in participating in the 4th annual Great Plains
Theatre Conference. Each year we receive hundreds of new scripts from playwrights around the country.
After the plays are put through a blind reading selection process, the top plays are selected and their
playwrights offered readings, a panel critique and an opportunity to participate in our writer’s workshop. The
Conference is a great chance to meet and work with top playwrights, directors, actors, and theater
professionals from around the country.
We have always relied on the talented pool of actors, theater companies, and directors that are
indigenous to the Omaha, Lincoln and Council Bluffs areas. We have also been honored to entertain
gifted actors and directors who hail from all over the United States. Every year we select a very diverse
and challenging group of new plays to present, and to do the job properly, we need to expand our talent
base.
If you are an actor or director interested in donating your time and talent, we would like to hear from you.
The 4th annual Great Plains Theatre Conference runs from May 23-30, 2009, and takes place on the Fort
Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College. If you have these dates free and are interested in
being a part of this exciting and intensive week of theatre, then we encourage you to submit your
headshot, résumé and brief biography (150 words or less) for posting on our Conference web site. For
actors and directors, the web site is a great tool that allows directors a method to locate the best possible
actors for their readings. We will begin selecting actors and directors for the conference by March 2nd,
2009.
ACTORS
Actors will be cast by our guest directors, or the conference creative team. Time commitments will vary
depending on your director and the category that the play has been selected for during the conference.
Depending on your availability, we may ask if you would be involved in more than one reading at the
conference.
We appreciate your donations of time and talent. As a gesture of thanks, actors who volunteer for the
conference will receive free admission to all the conference events. You will be able to attend and, or,
participate in the play labs, acting workshops, panel discussions, play slam, evening performances,
parties, and the gala. Discounted housing arrangements can be made for actors from out of town.
Submit a photo and Word document or pdf resume including your email address and phone number to: theatreconference@mccneb.edu with the subject line: Call for Actors. Contact information will not be posted for the public.
DIRECTORS
Directors are responsible for directing, casting and rehearsing their assigned plays. In most cases, this
will include one reader specifically designated to read stage instructions. Directors will also set up lines of
communication with their playwrights, and, through discussion, agree on the play’s interpretation, casting
concepts and desired goals for the reading. When the director first receives a script, the first task is to
make initial contact with the playwright; this must be done before casting occurs. It is imperative that the
director set up a rehearsal for the playwright to attend before the final reading.
Remember that these are readings and not fully mounted productions. No costumes or props are
necessary. Directors are not allowed to edit any portion of the text without the consent of the playwright.
Time is not an issue; therefore, scripts do not need to be cut to fit an allotted time slot.
As with the actors, we appreciate your donations of time and talent.. As a gesture of thanks, directors
who volunteer for the conference will receive free admission to all the conference events. You will be
able to attend and, or, participate in the play labs, acting workshops, panel discussions, play slam,
evening performances, parties, and the gala. Discounted housing arrangements can be made for
directors from out of town.
