Cindy Melby Phaneuf


Cindy Melby Phaneuf is a Professor of Theatre at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.  She is co-founder of the Nebraska Shakespeare Festival and served as its Artistic Director from 1986 until 2010, directing Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, Henry V, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream among many others. Cindy has received numerous awards for her teaching, directing, and creative activity, including the Isaacson Professor of Research and Creative Activity, University Outstanding Teaching Award, and YWCA Woman of the Year for the Arts. She is Past-President of the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA), where she planned the International Conference at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe. Most recently, she was elected Vice President/President-Elect of The National Theatre Conference (NTC), an organization dedicated to the betterment of the American Theatre. In the fall, she will direct Caridad Svich’s 12 Ophelias (a play with broken songs) at UNO.
