Call for Actors, Directors and Technical Staff

The 7th annual Great Plains Theatre Conference runs May 26 - June 2, 2012 and takes place on the Fort Omaha Campus of Metropolitan Community College and in venues around the Omaha Metro area.

The GPTC has always relied upon the talented pool of local actors, directors and technical staff, and in recent years, has also been honored to welcome gifted actors and directors to participate from across the United States. Annually, we utilize upwards of 250 artists throughout the week of the Conference.

Each year we select a diverse and challenging group of new plays to present, and to do the job properly, we need to continue to enhance our talent base. The GPTC offers a great opportunity to meet and work with top playwrights, directors, actors, and theatre professionals from around the country.

This is where YOU come in.

If you are an ACTOR, DIRECTOR or THEATRE TECHNICIAN
interested in PARTICIPATING in the 2012 GPTC, fill out our form
and submit for consideration your PHOTO (preferably a headshot)
and THEATRE RESUME or BRIEF PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY

ACTORS

Actors will be cast by our guest directors or the GPTC creative team. Time commitments will vary depending on the director and the category that the play has been selected for (PlayLab, MainStage, PlayFest). Depending on your availability, we may ask if you would be involved in more than one reading at the Conference. Actors should be prepared for a minimum of three rehearsals for PlayLabs; PlayFest shows (evening performances) may require more extensive rehearsal time. Actors cast in PlayFest performances and MainStage readings will receive a stipend. Participation in PlayLab readings is on a voluntary basis.

TECHNICAL STAFF

Technical personnel are needed primarily during PlayFest, the GPTC evening performance series. We are looking for qualified stage managers, light board operators, sound desk operators, some limited lighting/sound designers and running crew. The PlayFest performances consist of a combination of five nights of readings and full/partially produced productions. Since these productions may be performing and rehearsing at various locations in the city, flexibility on time and transportation is a must. These productions begin rehearsals prior to the Conference week, but will tech during that week. Technical staff chosen to participate in will receive a stipend.

DIRECTORS

Directors are responsible for directing, casting and rehearsing their assigned plays. Directors will also set up lines of communication with their playwrights, and, through discussion, agree on the play’s interpretation, casting concepts and desired goals for the reading. The first task a director has upon receiving a script, is to make initial contact with the playwright; this must be done before casting occurs. It is imperative that the director set up a rehearsal for the playwright to attend before the final reading, normally this occurs during the week of the Conference. Directors chosen to participate will receive a stipend.

Directors should keep in mind that PlayLab and MainStage readings are just that, and not fully mounted productions. No costumes or props are necessary. In most cases, one reader will be specifically designated to read stage directions. Directors may NOT edit any portion of the text without the consent of the playwright. Time is not an issue; therefore, scripts do not need to be cut to fit an allotted time slot.

ACTOR DATABASE (for Directors ONLY)

Our database of actors is a great tool that allows directors a method to locate the best possible actors for their readings by searching our gallery of participating actors’ headshots. Also available are actors’ Personal Biographies and/or Resumes and contact information. This database will be available from January through May, and will be updated continually. This private link will be sent to participating directors once selected.

IF SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE

Individuals selected to participate will be required to REGISTER for the GPTC, and submit a personal biography (of 150 words or less). Both the bio and headshot will be published in the Conference program and loaded onto the GPTC website. Any resumes submitted as part of the Call will be used only for our database and not published on our website for public viewing.

We appreciate your donation of time and talent. As a gesture of thanks, those chosen to participate in the GPTC will receive free admission to all the Conference events, including attendance to and participation in the daily PlayLabs and MainStage readings, acting workshops, panel discussions, PlaySlam, PlayFest performances and the Gala. Discounted housing arrangements may be made for those from out of town.

All actors, directors and technical staff selected to participate in the 2012 GPTC
will be required to REGISTER for the Conference (info to come later), via our website, www.mccneb.edu/theatreconference.
