Single parent coordinator corner

Conference attendeesTRiO students who are single parents had the opportunity to attend the 12th Annual Reach for the Stars Single Parent Conference on Friday, Nov.18. They spent the day attending various workshops designed to help enhance and improve not only their parenting skills but their life skills as well. The conference, held at the South Omaha Campus, was also attended by more than 200 college and high school students, counselors and teachers.

The guest speaker, Alicia Youngblood, human resource manager/assistant director for The Educare Center of Omaha, shared her personal story of hard work and dedication. She stressed the importance of reaching your goals and sticking to your educational pursuits.

Conference attendeesDoor prizes ranging from gift baskets filled with baby items to car seats were provided by the agencies who displayed their services at the conference. Every participant at the conference was also given books to take home and read to their children. Special thanks to Mainfreight for their generous donation of hundreds of books and to GradeCheck.net for their contribution that allowed meals to be served to conference attendees.

This year's Betty Rubin Scholarship was also awarded. Congratulations to Danielle Patteron.

The purpose of this annual event is to provide information to single parents on relationships, nutrition, childcare and health concerns and help them make better decisions.
