Joy Dodd, who preferred his nickname of Broom, was born in Arkansas. He left home when he was finishing 8th grade and found work in a garage for a few years. Over the years, Broom worked as a truck driver, worked in oil fields in Texas, and finally ending up in Nebraska working on the Missouri River and then for construction firms in Omaha, operating heavy equipment. He was a self-learner and hard worker which could work in those days. Eventually, Broom started his own business, called JD's Construction Company, located between Union and Murray, Nebraska. Broom operated heavy equipment such as a bulldozer, backhoe, skid loader, and trencher. He excavated basements for many new homes in Cass County, trenched/installed water and sewer systems, and also drainage systems for farmers. After his death, this scholarship was established in Broom's memory to help a student with a desire for a vocational education and career. This scholarship is awarded annually in his honor.
