Ease the transition to e-learning and teleworking

Making the transition from working and learning in-person to online can be a big adjustment. With less face-to-face contact with teachers, classmates, coworkers and more, it can be difficult for some.

“You miss those casual conversations, insights and teamwork,” says Dawn Nizzi, manager of Development, Training and Outreach for Metropolitan Community College’s Workforce Innovation Division. But there are ways to ease into the change of scenery and workflow, she says.

For those working and learning from their home, getting a good workspace set up is the first step to doing well. Although, all that screen time may take a toll.

“It’s key to have workspace and organization of tasks,” Nizzi explains. “At home, your screen might be smaller and being on it 8 a.m.-5 p.m. can cause headaches. Be sure to step away from the screen every so often to help alleviate that. I think, too, many people feel this sense of responsibility to be 100 percent online during the work day to be seen as ‘productive.’”

If one’s online class or job already allows great flexibility, moving to teleworking or e-learning can be an easy transition, Nizzi says.

“If your work isn't bound by the regular business day, this could really allow for awesome flexibility for when you do the work,” she says.

People can stay connected to teachers, classmates and coworkers by emailing and phone calls, but also with the help of digital communication programs like Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams and Google Hangouts.

What’s most important to remember, Nizzi says, is that many are going through this big transition at the same time and may be feeling the same way.

“We need to have empathy and kindness through all of this. Remember the mission and a sense of responsibility to the organization to power through what is not one's natural way of doing the work. The change really requires compassion and understanding,” Nizzi says. “It’s all about adjusting to adjusting.”
