MCC begins Black History Month on Jan. 28 with discussion on voting

OMAHA, Neb. — Metropolitan Community College will host “Black History Month Kick-Off: African Americans and the Vote” on Tuesday, Jan. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Swanson Conference Center inside the Institute for the Culinary Arts on the Fort Omaha Campus, 32nd Street and Sorensen Parkway. Maurice J. Hobson, Ph.D., an associate professor of African American Studies at Georgia State University, will be the featured speaker. The event will also feature musical entertainment by local artist Kathy Tyree.

Hobson will explore the history of Black America and voting after the American Civil War. Focusing on voter suppression that has impacted Black communities, he will detail the emergence of the Black New South and will address the realities of contemporary African American communities.

The educational event is free and open to the public. A meet and greet with a hors d’oeuvres buffet will begin at 6 p.m. Stay tuned for future announcements regarding Black History Month events at MCC.
