what is 'Humanities (HUMS)'?

Through a variety of course offerings, humanities is the study of humans, their place in the world and their interests beyond survival needs. Being a part of the human race means coming to understand the big picture of how art and culture help refine us, help us make connections from past events to the present and considerations on events of the future.


If you are interested in seeing the big picture of the world, where you fit in and how you can express yourself through knowledge and participation of the arts, and if you are interested in learning about the cultures of a variety of peoples, humanities is for you. You will be able to choose among the following topics and classes: The Art of Being Human, philosophy, music, dance, theatre, film, visual arts and architecture.


Global Languages - intense courses aimed at the student seeking fluency in a language well beyond ‘survival phrase’ learning for travel

  • Language Interpretation (LGICE) - certificate of achievement, online courses providing up-and-coming intrepreters the skills required for success in this field

Music - courses offer a good springboard for students of the Humanities and all disciplines who are interested in widening their outlook with exposure to the world of music
Philosophy - courses support General Education competencies and engages students with the broadest and most fundamental questions about the nature of human being, society, and the universe
Sign Language - courses introduce students to the structure of American Sign Language and help students develop an understanding of the deaf community and deaf culture
Spanish -  integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as educatse and increases awareness of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world

  • Liberal Arts/Academic Transfer - Language Studies (LTLAA) - associate in art, offers a broad-based liberal arts education to students interested in pursuing language studies in Spanish, French or Japanese language and cultural studies at a four-year institution
  • Spanish for Healthcare (SMPS1) - career certificate, for students who wish to study Spanish to better communicate with medical patients or clients
  • Spanish for Business (SBPS1) - career certificate, for students who wish to better communicate with Hispanic business clients

Speech - courses focus on developing oral communication skills by studying communication theory and then practicing these vital skills
