Economists engage in a number of activities including research, analysis, advising, and teaching. Some work for local, state and federal government entities, such as the Federal Reserve, analyzing and forecasting market conditions and trends. Other are employed by large businesses and organization where they utilize analytics and mathematical models to inform operations. Many economists work for colleges and universities teaching students important macro and micro concepts as well as international and comparative economics.
Economists study the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Economists explores how individuals, businesses, governments and other organizations make choices under conditions of scarcity. Macroeconomics is concerned with the overall national economy analyzing the decisions made by countries and governments. Microeconomics is focused on decisions made by individuals, groups and companies. 

CAREER outlook

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the largest employers of economists include:

  • Federal government
  • Scientific research and development services
  • Management, scientific and technical consulting services
  • State government
  • Finance
  • Insurance 

It is estimated that between 2018 and 2028, employment of economists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. Job prospects are projected to be best for those with advanced degrees (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
