Rodeo Events
C1 Framing
- The pole will be on the ground set up in a framing gin
- The structure will be framed precisely according to RUS spec C1.11 (Spec shown at the bottom)
- No locknuts will be used for speed of the competition
- Tools allowed: 12 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, hammer, channel lock, screwdriver
- Note: NO quick wrenches of any kind
- Gloves and long sleeves shall be worn.
- No coaching allowed in this event.
The following steps apply:
- Participant will have a five minute set up time
- All materials and tools will be in set up area 5’ away from the pole
- Participant may arrange materials in any fashion except no washers are to be on any bolts to begin with
- Polymer insulators will already be on crossarm pins and pole top pins
- Participant will begin with both hands on the pole and time will start on the judge’s command
- Assemble materials in any order
- Align the braces and place the lag bolt on the pole
- Do not drive the lag
- Time will stop when the participant and all of their tools return to the set up area
Participants will be scored with 100 points possible. Infractions will result in a 2-point deduction for each occurrence. Participant’s time will be applied in the event of a tie score.
C1 Framing Scoresheet
Cross Arm Change Out (40 foot Pole)
- Structure will be framed to C-1 Specifications
- ½ Inch bolt used for braces. No upset bolt
- Tools allowed: 12 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, hammer, channel lock, screwdriver, hand line and sheave with safety lock and becky, climbing tools of the participants’ choice. Note: NO quick wrenches of any kind
- Gloves and long sleeves shall be worn.
- Coaching allowed by participating team member only.
The following steps apply:
- Participant will have a five minute set up time
- Participant will start with fall restraint attached to the pole
- Time starts when the first gaff contacts the pole
- Ascend pole and hang hand line before any work begins
- Hand line shall be attached around pole with becky (schools are required to bring their own handlines)
- Secure the cross arm with knots/hitches of the participants choice in two points around the arm between the carriage bolts and each end of the crossarm.
- Groundman will lower the arm in a controlled decent until it comes in contact with the earth, and then raise it back to the participant.
- Participant will attach the arm back to the pole and tighten all hardware.
- Lower sheave, making sure to yell headache, then drop hand line
- Climb down pole
- Time stops when first foot hit the ground
Participants will be scored with 100 points possible. Infractions will result in a two-point deduction for each occurrence. Participant’s time will be applied in the event of a tie score.
Crossarm Change-out Scoresheet
Obstacle Course (40 foot Pole)
- There will be three stations on the pole
- A double arm assembled 12” from the top of the pole with a polymer suspension insulator and an automatic dead-end shoe attached to an eye bolt on one end of the crossarm
- A double arm 12’ below the top arm with a cutout attached on the opposite end of the arm as the top arm’s suspension insulator
- Cutout will have the door installed
- Cutout bracket will utilize square nuts and no washers
- A single arm 8’ from the ground with two, 10’ long ropes for tying knots
- Tools allowed: 12 and 10 inch adjustable wrench, hammer, channel lock, screwdriver, hand line and sheave with safety lock and becky, climbing tools of the participants’ choice. Note: NO quick wrenches of any kind
- Gloves and long sleeves shall be worn.
- Coaching allowed by participating team member only
The following steps apply:
- Participant will have a five minute set up time
- Participant will start with fall restraint attached to the pole
- Time starts when the first gaff contacts the pole
- Participant must be belted below the crossarm at each station
- Ascend pole and hang handline before any work begins at each of the top two stations (schools are required to bring their own handlines), they can be done in any order
- At the top station, remove the suspension insulator from one end of the arm and attach it to the opposite end
- Cotter pins on the insulator and shoe must face the pole
- At the middle station, remove the cutout from one end of the arm and attach it to the opposite end
- There will be a one foot area in which to place the cutout
- At the lowest station, the participant will tie a bowline around the crossarm on one end and clove hitch around the arm on the other end
- No hand line is needed at this station
- Lower sheave, making sure to yell headache, then drop hand line (the handline can be lowered at the higher stations)
- Climb down pole
- Time stops when first foot hit the ground

Obstacle Course Scoresheet
General Knowledge Written Test
- The written test consists of 25 multiple choice questions
- The test will cover sections 1-21 of the 2nd edition of The Guidebook for Linemen and Cablemen
- Each question is worth 4 points
- The test will be taken on computer
- The judge will signal the start time and once time begins the competitor will have 15 minutes to complete the test
- The tests will be automatically graded
- Time will be used to break any ties
Any protests must be made before exiting the testing area
Mystery Event
There will be a mutual aid event following the competition. Each school will choose two students to participate. This event will not figure into the overall competition, however, a prize will be provided to the winner. Further details will be provided at the event.
