What is server administration?

A server or systems administrator manages computer networks and ensures that they run efficiently in an office environment by tracking server activity, maintaining computer software and hardware, addressing questions about technical problems, and improving efficiency by evaluating network functions.

Students in the program will manage servers/workstations and the active directory in a virtualized environment. The classes can be completed entirely online or as a combination of online and on-campus courses. Hands-on practical activities are emphasized in the classes.

Individuals interested in an IT career should be curious, have the ability to think logically, and have strong problem-solving skills. A working knowledge of mathematics and good communication skills are also important since troubleshooting, teamwork, and helping others are important aspects of most IT jobs.

Aspiring server administrators should have some work experience in a related IT role and an associate degree in a computer-related field. Individuals may also pursue systems administration certification through vendors such as Microsoft and Cisco.

Job outlook and Salary Expectations

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual wage for network and computer system administrators was $81,100 in 2017.

Employment of network and computer systems administrators is projected to grow 6 percent from 2016 to 2026. Options will be greatest for those with a combination of education, professional experience, and professional certifications.

Associate in applied science Degree

  • Server Administration (ITSAO) - This degree prepares students to successfully implement, configure, and maintain a Windows server in the Active Directory environment of large companies. Students gain a strong technical foundation in monitoring and managing a network infrastructure.

Certificate of achievement

  • Server Technician (ITSRO) - This certificate of achievement option teaches the foundation skills necessary to support servers.
