About the MCC Fiber Optics Technician Bootcamp

MCC’s Fiber Optic Technician is an accelerated professional training program leading to industry-recognized certifications through the Fiber Optics Association (FOA). MCC classes are 85% hands-on instruction, where participants apply industry standards aligned with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024 International Standard for Certifying Bodies. FOA certification exams are included with tuition and administered onsite at the end of each class.

The program is delivered in an accelerated learning model consisting of four classes and certifications over nine consecutive days: Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT); Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing & Main (CFOS/T); Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist (CFOS/S); and Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Outside Plant (CFOS/O). All MCC Fiber Optic Technician courses are delivered in a synchronous live, face-to-face instruction. The enhanced learning format allows participants to complete the program in an accelerated timeline helping them achieve employment goals more quickly. Additionally, classes can optionally be taken independently or as a cluster.

Audience:

  • Current fiber optic professionals seeking professional development
  • Individuals seeking a career in the fiber optics industry

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course Descriptions:

Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT):  This 3-day, 24-hour course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. Students identify fiber types; recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. Topics also include the history and future of fiber optics, fiber optics capabilities, and basic testing and troubleshooting. This course is a prerequisite course required before taking any of the Advanced Specialist Fiber Optic Training courses. Students must pass both the written and hands-on exams to successfully pass the certification. Course Objective: This course prepares a student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optics Technician) exam given and graded at the end of class. Upon completion, students are able to effectively and efficiently install, terminate, and test multimode or single-mode fiber optic networks to existing standards.
Hours: 24                                Prerequisite – Able to see, identify, and manipulate small items, and be able to read and speak the English language.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing & Main (CFOS/T): This 2-day, 16-hour class explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing and how to choose among them. This 85% hands on course explores the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of single-mode fiber optics networks and provides a detailed overview and demonstration of various pieces of equipment used in testing and maintenance. Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-(7)A, OTDR fundamentals and uses, OTDR vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Attenuation testing using the Power Source and Light Meter. Course Objective: This course prepares s to take the Specialist in Testing & Maintenance Fiber Optics Certification Exam given at the end of class. Upon completion, s are able to effectively and efficiently identify fiber network defects, and provide QA (Quality Assurance) procedures to minimize or eliminate future network outages.
Hours: 16                                Prerequisite – CFOT

Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist (CFOS/S): This 2-day, 16-hour Splicing Specialist Training includes the importance of high performance splicing and further details the points necessary to achieve these splices. An overview of OTDR functions and trace understanding is also provided. 85% hands-on classroom activities will provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of either single or multimode fiber optic cables. Inside or outside plant fiber optic cable types will be utilized during these hands-on sessions along with fiber optics enclosures and splice trays. In addition to the basic splicing activities, the participant will make and test both mechanical and fusion splices, and correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and enclosures. The participant will further be required to achieve a splice loss of less than 0.15 dB for all splices and demonstrate proficiency in interpretation of splice loss using OTDR splice traces. Course Objective: This course prepares s to take the CFOS/S (Certified Fiber Optics Specialist/Splicing) exam that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association). The exam is given and graded the final day of class.
Hours: 16                                  Prerequisite – CFOT

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Outside Plant (CFOS/O):  This 2-day, 16-hour specialist course is an advanced Fiber Optic training that combines lecture sessions with 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the CFOS/O, OSP hands on and written exams that are sanctioned by the FOA. This course introduces the student to industry standards governing the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of OSP fiber optics cable – primarily single-mode OSP cable used in the Outside Plant Rugged Environment. Participants will learn how to properly identify OSP fiber cabling types, recognize various outside plant closures used in OSP fiber installation, install, prepare, terminate, splice, and properly test and troubleshoot installed OSP fiber cable to existing standards.   Note: Participants must pass both the written and hands on exams to successfully pass this course.   Course Objective: This course prepares s to take the Fiber Optics Specialist Outside Plant (OSP) Certification Exam (Written and Hands-On) given at the end of class.  s will be able to effectively and efficiently troubleshoot, test, identify, and repair OSP fiber network cabling, and provide QA (Quality Assurance) procedures.
Hours: 16                                   Prerequisite – CFOT
