CARES Scholarship

What is the MCC Cares Scholarship?

The MCC Cares Scholarship* is a one-time allocation of up to $1,100 to be used on short-term training programs or to be used towards an Associate Degree. Short-term training programs are non-credit courses that lead to industry recognized certifications and knowledge. Typically, short-term training programs are specific to an industry and take anywhere from two weeks to nine months to complete. Individuals can also use the scholarship to kick-start their education towards an Associate Degree at MCC (you will need to meet with a Career Skills Coach to get clarification on what programs you are able to use the scholarship on). For instance, you can begin taking welding courses with the scholarship and work towards earning a Career Certificate or Certificate of Achievement and later an Associate’s Degree in Welding Technology. The main goal of recipients receiving the scholarship is that they gain education, skills and tools to re-enter the workforce or up-skill in the workforce into sustainable, gainful full-time employment.

How do I know if I am eligible for the MCC Cares Scholarship?

To be eligible for the MCC Cares Scholarship you must meet the following guidelines:

  • Must have an NEworks account created (NEworks.Nebraska.Gov)

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have a registered Social Security Number or Permanent Resident Card

  • Must be able to provide documentation of received Unemployment Insurance Benefits

  • Must be able to commit to the time frame of a decided training program

  • Must be willing to gain full-time gainful employment at the conclusion of training program

  • Must have employment affected by COVID-19 related to ONE of the below categories:

    • Unemployed on or after March 13, 2020 as a result of COVID-19;

    • Unemployed starting between January 1, 2020 and March 13, 2020 and are now unable to find employment as a result of COVID-19;

    • Employed for less than 40 hours a week at a job which provides the majority of their income (Primary Job) because of COVID-19 and wish to be employed full time

    • Employed temporarily at their Primary Job because of COVID-19 but wish to be employed permanently; or

    • Furloughed or laid off from a Primary Job on or after March 13, 2020 because of COVID-19 (or had to close their own business, which provided the majority of their income, because of COVID-19) and are now employed at a new Primary Job with lower wages than their previous employment.

What happens after I have applied?

Within 24 hours after you have applied, you will receive an email including your next steps. Make sure to check your junk mail or spam, as the email can sometimes be found in those folders. One of the main next steps you will be required to do is to schedule a meeting with a Career Skills Coach. A link to the online scheduling system will be included in the email you receive. The meeting with the Career Skills Coach will take about 45 minutes and will be conducted virtually using Microsoft Teams. During this meeting, you will verify your application information, discuss training programs to enter, and any applicable next steps.

If you are unable to conduct the intake virtually, you will still need to book your appointment through the link provided in the email you receive. After you have booked an appointment, you can send an email to MCCCaresScholarship@mccneb.edu to request either an in-person meeting or a meeting via phone.

If for any reason you do not receive an email after you have applied for the MCC Cares Scholarship, contact MCCCaresScholarship@mccneb.edu to let the team know. A team member will then send you the appropriate information you need to begin the next steps.

What programs can I enroll in with the MCC Cares Scholarship?

There are many programs you can enroll in. Before you choose, you will meet with a Career Skills Coach to determine the best program for you.

Business Management & Insurance

    Description: This program is designed for students wanting to enter employment as an entry-level project manager or project based professional. The program is aligned with the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and infuses foundations of leadership and agile/lean methodology. Project based professionals are in-demand occupation in several industries including but not limited to: information technology, construction, banking, finance, government, nonprofit, legal, healthcare, and many more.

  • Certified Site Supervisor

    Description: The BSCAI Certified Site Supervisor is a symbol of leadership excellence in the building service contractors industry, and is designed for on-site supervisors and other members of the leadership team. It provides more knowledge to that site supervisor and account manager for their day-to-day work and to do their job better in general. This training includes effective cleaning strategies, account management, hiring and firing, HR-related topics, motivation and front office concerns.

    Description: This is a part-time professional learning program in which participants will work through online modules and in-person classroom sessions to learn core methodologies of Lean Six Sigma processes using statistical methods and Microsoft Excel to solve a real work project. The courses emphasize interactive simulations, small group interaction and comprehensive real-world projects. Upon completion students will earn and Lean Six Sigma White Belt, Yellow Belt and Green Belt.

    Description: This program satisfies pre-licensing standards for Nebraska Property and Causality Insurance Producer license, and Nebraska Health and Life Insurance Producer license. Successful participants obtain Nebraska Insurance producer licenses, work-readiness certifications, and job interviews with ready-to-hire companies for entry-level insurance producer positions.

    Description: This program is designed for students wanting to enter employment as an intermediate or advanced project manager or project based professional.     Description: Through the SAS Visual Business Analytics Professional Certificate, you get access to hands-on projects that are built into the course work of each course. Examples of projects include Visual Analytics Methodology, Designing Reports with SAS Visual Analytics Review, Restructuring Data for Forecasting Review, and Using Parameters to Create Advanced Reports Review. Participants are expected to study at least four hours per week.

  • Commercial Custodian Certificate

    Description: Commercial custodial staff are employed in about every business and industry. This Commercial custodian Certificate Program highlights comprehensive safety and security aspects of the mail commercial cleaning tools, chemicals and equipment. Upon successful program completion, students will earn a 10-hour OSHA Safety Card, Customer Service Certificate and unmatched custodial training & experience tailored to different types of businesses. Participants will walk away with knowledge and skill to fulfill their career goals in the Custodial industry.

  • Facilities Maintenance

    Description: This training program provides the skills needed to perform a variety of duties in one or more of the building trades, such as minor electrical, plumbing, or other recognized crafts for the purpose to maintain, repair or remodel buildings and facilities. Minor HVAC and other mechanical systems are included. Upon successful completion of this program, students are prepared for employment in entry-level positions such as Building Maintenance Technician, Apartment Facilities Technician, Property Maintenance Technician, and Maintenance Technicians.

    Description: This career certificate is a focused set of classes designed to prepare students to work in the supply chain areas of business and industry. Whether in a parts department of an automotive shop, a food manufacturing plant, or a distribution warehouse, this certificate provides a useful set of skills. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students have the opportunity to earn industry recognized, nationally validated certifications through the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council.

  • Manufacturing & Production CPP

    Description: This program is designed for students wanting to enter employment as an entry-level manufacturing or production professional. Student will gain foundational knowledge in OSHA forklift and general industry safety, lean and measurement, plus training on work ethics and communication. Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to enter the field as material handlers, machine operators, forklift operators or maintenance technicians.

  • Production Maintenance

    Description: The career certificate, includes Forklift and OSHA 10 enhances skills required for understanding the shift work, processes and operations found in various manufacturing industries.

  • Sheet Metal Program

    Description: This program focuses on engaging students who are interested in the sheet meal trade by having them build parts of a real aircraft. Students will learn the basics in sheet metal to include: riveting, bending, shaping, blueprint reading, LEAN practices and quality assurance. In this five-week, 100 hour program, students also will work with Career Skill Coaches on improving their employability soft-skills. Students will leave this course with desirable workforce skills in the Omaha area and would have met with representatives from the local sheet metal union. Pre-apprentice employment beginning wage starts at $12.00/hr. and Apprentice wage starts at $16.43/hr.

    Description: Whether your goal is to work for a retail pharmacy, local druggist, grocery store, or hospital, pharmacy technicians play an important role of a rewarding profession. Topics include dosage forms, routes of administration, measurements and calculations, infection control, medication safety, prescription reading, and pharmacology. Upon successful completion of the certification exam, participants complete an 80-hour externship in a retail pharmacy setting.

Information Technology

    Description: This program is designed to give participants with background in computer programming the skills necessary to design and develop 3D and virtual reality (VR) applications and games. Participants will learn the basics of 2D, 3D, mobile and VR development and integration, then advance into intermediate topics of using the Unity engine to program and design professional applications. Participants can earn up to three Unity certifications including Unity Certified Programmer and Unity Certified 3D Artist. Upon completion, participants can obtain employment in entry-level computer programming positions with titles such as 3D Programmer, 3D Developer, 3D Engineer, Virtual Reality Developer, Game Artist and Gaming Software Engineer.

    Description: This program provides students with the skills needed to advance their career as a professional cloud architect. Students will have the opportunity to deploy solution elements, including infrastructure components such as networks, systems and applications services, and they ill gain real world experience through a number of hands-on projects. Participants are expected to study at least five hours per week.

    Description: This program provides students with the skills needed to advance their career as a cloud engineer. Hands-on lab components will allow students to apply the skills they learn in the video lectures and projects will incorporate topics such as Google Cloud Platform products. Students also have the opportunity to practice key job skills, such as setting up a cloud environment and configuring and deploying a solution in the cloud. Participants are expected to study at least five hours per week.

    Description: Students in this program will gain knowledge on the basics of working with web components with technologies including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Java and MySQL. Learn best practices such as Agile, version control with GIT and pair programming practicing what you've learned with relevant assignments.   • CompTIA A+

    Description: CompTIA A+ certification is an internationally recognized, vendor-neutral certification that many employers consider a prerequisite for entry-level IT employment. This course is the complete solution for A+ exam preparation. This course provides everything needed to understand the basics of IT and demonstrate understanding effectively. Topics include Windows operating system, mobile OS, with an emphasis on practical skills required on the job, crucial hardware and operating system maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • CompTIA Fundamentals+

    Description: The CompTIA IT Fundamentals course provides information that prepares participants to take the exam to obtain the IT Fundamentals+ certification and helps students learn some of the basic principles and techniques of providing PC, mobile, applications and network support. Upon course completion students will be able to set up a computer workstation an d use basic software applications, explain the functions and types of devices used in a computer system. Apply basic computer maintenance and support principles and describe some principles of software and database development.

    Description: This program provides the skills you need to advance your career in data engineering and recommends training to support your preparation for the industry-recognized Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer certification. Through a combination of presentations, demos, and labs, you will enable data-driven decision making by collecting, transforming, and publishing data; and you'll gain real world experience through a number of hands-on Qwiklabs projects.

    You'll also have the opportunity to practice key job skills, including designing, building, and running data processing systems; and operationalizing machine-learning models.

    Participants are expected to study at least five hours per week. Upon successful completion of this program, you will earn a certificate of completion to share with your professional network and potential employers.

    Description: This 8-month Digital Marketing program provides the participants with the knowledge and skills to kickstart your journey into the high-demand career area of digital marketing. Participants walk away with a strong understanding of core concepts including: market positioning, brand positioning, targeting and segmentation, marketing channels and metrics. By the end of the program, participants will create a marketing plan that can be showcased to potential employers. This Digital Marketing Certificate program consists of six, four-week modules with two week breaks between each module. Program discounts are available. This program is completely online and instructed by an industry practitioner with current digital marketing experience and knowledge. Participants have access to the online learning system 24 hours per day/7 days per week.

    Description: This program is designed to give participants the opportunity to obtain employment in the low-voltage and fiber optics profession. Successful participants obtain Fiber Optics Association (FOA) certifications, work-readiness certifications, and job interviews with ready-to-hire companies for entry-level insurance producer positions.

    Description: This program includes innovative curriculum designed to prepare students for an entry-level role in IT customer service and support. It's a perfect entry point to start a career in IT with a multitude of job openings ranging from onsite or remote help desk work to customer care or client support. Through a mix of video lectures, quizzes, and hands-on labs and widgets, the program will introduce you to troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration and security. You’ll hear from Googlers with unique backgrounds whose own foundation in IT support served as a jumping off point for their careers. Additionally, students will increase their level of communication, problem solving, appropriate empathetic behavior and process adherence to ensure the proper flow and service level agreements are met.     Description: This Professional Certificate will give you a firm understanding of AI, its applications, and its use cases. You will become familiar with IBM Watson AI services and APIs. If you have no programming background, you will be able to create AI driven chatbots as well as pick up practical Python skills to work with AI. The courses will also enable you to apply pre-built AI smarts to your products and solutions. Participants are expected to study at least five hours per week.

    Description: This specialization is intended to kick-off your career in the enterprise platform that powers over 68% of world wide transactions. Learners will build complete foundational skills in IBM Z hardware and software, especially around z/OS and System Administration. This course includes hands-on labs on a real IBM Z server (no simulations), giving the learner real world experience. Participants are expected to study at least three hours per week.

  • IT and Cybersecurity Professional Level 1 CPP

    Description: This program is designed for students wanting to enter employment as an entry-level IT or cybersecurity professional. Student will gain foundational knowledge in cybersecurity and networking, plus obtain interpersonal training on problem solving, work ethics and communication. Upon completion, students can expect opportunities for entry-level positions in Cybersecurity, Networking or IT Hardware, Services and Infrastructure.

  • IT Operations Specialist

    Description: This program is for students wanting to enter employment as an entry-level IT professional. Student will gain foundational knowledge in cybersecurity, networking, hardware and software, plus obtain interpersonal training on problem solving, work ethics and communication. Upon completion, students can expect opportunities for entry-level positions in IT Hardware or Networking.

Advanced Manufacturing
  • Description: Our program is ASE Education Foundation Master Level accredited, CAPS Local program and offers more than 19 NC3 certifications to both our students and the public through continuing education.

  • Description: The Automotive Technology program focuses on preparing students for careers in the automotive field and works closely with regional and national industry to encourage growth, relevancy and training in preparation for real-world work environments. We are committed members of an increasingly multicultural and diverse society creating a curriculum and a learning environment which empowers students to become contributing members of the community.

  • Description: Metropolitan Community College offers the highest quality, most cost-effective and up-to-date training available. Class A courses are offered with manual and automatic transmission trucks. Training includes techniques for driving on city streets and highways and preparation for the CDL exam. Third Party Examiners are on-site.

  • Description: This career certificate enables students to enhance their job-relevant skills in the workplace using CAD software. They are able to apply CAD software and 3-D solids modeling in the design of mechanisms and other machine components.

  • Description: This career certificate provides the knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position in the transportation industry. The career certificate provides students with fundamental instruction in the basic operation of diesel engines, service, brakes, electrical systems, and power trains.

  • Description: This program provides training for entry-level employees in a variety of continuous process operating plants. These include ethanol and bio-diesel plants along with other bio-processing industries. A complete power plant operations option is also available. Graduates are trained to operate and maintain process plants and power generating plants. The program provides students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on training within the skilled trades.

  • Description: Mechanical Design Technology programs teach students to design products using relevant engineering concepts and computer-aided design (CAD) technologies. In addition to covering CAD technologies and general education requirements, coursework may include: Manufacturing processes. Technical drafting and math.

  • Description: This career certificate enhances the skills needed for positions as millwrights, machinists, mechanics, and production workers.

  • Description: This degree option provides education and training in machine tool operation and related subjects. This degree also prepares students for a career in tool and die-related fields. Students study die theory of blanking and notching dies. The student designs and constructs a basic die.

  • Description: MCC’s T-TEN program gives students the opportunity to learn from Toyota trained and certified instructors. In addition, students will be prepared to complete certification testing by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), considered the gold standard for independent certification of service technician skills and knowledge. Toyota requires graduates pass at least two ASE tests and meet a dealership experience requirement to be granted status as a Toyota Certified Technician.

Construction
  • Description: The Architectural Design Technology program combines drawing skills with architectural knowledge and powerful CAD software tools to prepare students for careers as professional architectural design technicians in the offices of architects, engineers, contractors and materials suppliers.

  • Description: The Civil Engineering Technology program prepares students for employment in the civil engineering field as civil engineering technicians. Civil engineering technology is one of the broadest fields in engineering because it is involved with many facets of our infrastructure, including roads, bridges, utilities, buildings and water treatment facilities. The Civil Engineering Technology program offers training in high-tech subjects and equipment like GPS satellite surveying and CAD drafting facilities.

  • Description: The Construction and Building Science program offers students a wide array of choices in the field of construction. An associate degree, certificate of achievement and career certificate are available across several options, including concrete/masonry, general, residential, management, remodeling and finish/cabinetry. Students gain practical experience in a lab setting applying their skills to real-world situations.

  • Description: This certificate provides basic framing and finishing skills using measuring devices and teaches the application of hand and power tools. Graduates are employable in large and small construction companies in both framing and finishing.

  • Description: The Electrical Technology program provides education and training for students who are seeking a career in the electrical field. Students entering into this program will study electrical systems in residential wiring, commercial wiring and industrial motor controls.

  • Description: The Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance Technology porgram prepares technicians to install, maintain, and repair automated machinery and computer-controlled mechanical systems in industrial settings. These technicians also test, operate, or maintain robotic equipment at worksites.

  • Description: This career certificate assists practicing small contractors and remodelers as well as those seeking knowledge and skills for entry-level employment in this area. It is for those who wish to obtain knowledge in code compliance, understanding of OSHA safety requirements, and expanded knowledge of materials and their proper use.

  • Grounds Management

    Description: This career certificate prepares students to enter into a grounds management position where a student will be able to install and care for plants and hardscapes.

  • Description: The Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) program covers all aspects of installing, troubleshooting and servicing heating, ventilating and air conditioning and refrigeration systems. This program combines class work with realistic hands-on lab experiences to prepare students for career opportunities as repair persons, business owners, wholesalers and in residential sales.

  • Description: Plumbing Technology is an instructional program that prepares individuals to practice as licensed plumbers by applying technical knowledge, safety and skills to lay out, assemble, install and maintain plumbing fixtures and systems for steam, natural gas, oil, hot water, heating, cooling, drainage, lubricating, sprinkling and industrial processing systems in home and business environments. The Program includes instruction in source determination, water distribution, waste removal, pressure adjustment, basic physics, technical mathematics, blueprint reading, pipe installation, pumps, brazing and soldering, plumbing inspection and applicable codes and standards.

  • Description: This career certificate is for students wishing to concentrate their studies on wire-based processes, procedures, and techniques. Students learn to read prints and interpret welding symbols; safely and skillfully use oxy-fuel, plasma, and air carbon arc cutting processes; safely and skillfully use gas metal arc and flux-cored arc welding equipment; produce sound fillet and groove welds in steel, stainless steel, and aluminum in all positions with gas metal arc welding using short-circuit, spray, and pulsed spray modes of metal transfer; and produce sound fillet and groove welds in steel using flux-cored arc welding.

  • Description: This career certificate is for students wishing to concentrate their studies on SMAW (stick)- and GTAW (TIG)-based processes, procedures, and techniques as they are applied to pipe welding. Students learn to read prints and interpret welding symbols; safely and skillfully use oxy-fuel, plasma, and air carbon arc cutting processes; safely and skillfully use shielded metal arc welding (stick) equipment; safely and skillfully use gas tungsten arc welding (TIG) equipment; produce sound fillet and groove welds in steel plate and pipe using E6010 and E7018 electrodes and steel plate using GTAW; and produce sound groove welds in pipe using GTAW.

  • Description: This career certificate is for students wishing to concentrate their studies on the shielded metal arc welding process, procedures, and techniques. Students learn to read prints and interpret welding symbols; safely and skillfully use oxy-fuel, plasma, and air carbon arc cutting processes; safely and skillfully use shielded metal arc welding (stick) equipment; and produce sound fillet and groove welds in steel plate and pipe using E6010 and E7018 electrodes.

  • Medical Services Representative

    Description: This program provides the basic medical knowledge needed for an entry-level position in a medical office setting. Courses include Medical Terminology I & II, Introduction to Medical Law & Ethics, Introduction to Electronic Health Records and a Lab Experience.

Information Technology
  • Description: This career certificate allows students to sit for the certification exam for the Cisco Certified Network Associate. Topics include networks, boundary protection, enterprise networking, security and automation.

  • Description: This program provides students with a strong foundation in program design, Web programming and design, and database processing that is needed in today's business world. Students gain experience in databses, Web design, and programming languages.

  • Description: This program prepares students to engage in the issues and emerging information and management concepts related to cybersecuirty. Students are provided with a strong technical foundation to analyze, identify, plan and apply the knowledge and skills learned to defend a network.

  • Description: Data centers are a critical part of today's data processing world. This program familiarizes studetns with the physical components, design, management, support and operations of a data center. Students learn about data center infrastructure, create a server environment to meet specific needs, and daily operatons of data center activities.

  • Description: Databases are the core of today's information systems and comprise one of the fastest growing ares of th einformation technology field. This degree provides students with a strong technical foundation in the design, implementation, and management of a relational database system.

Students learn foundational skills and concepts convering computer hardware, operating systems, networks and cybersecurity.

  • Description: The purpose of this program is to better prepare instructors/trainers to design, develop, implement and evaluate engaging learning opportunities through the use of technology tools for online or face-to-face delivery to meet varied educaitonal and business needs.

  • Description: Prepares students for a career in a variety of office and administrative support professions. The Office Administrative program provides students with a broad knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, business office knowledge, and communication and interpersonal skills. These skills provide the foundation needed to succeed in today's rapidly changing business world.

  • Description: This program prepares students to successfully implement, configure, and maintain a Windows server in the Active Directory environment of large companies. Students gain a strong technical foundation in m onitoring and managing a network infrastructure.
