Language and Literacy Center

The Language and Literacy Center at Metropolitan Community College offers resources for English language learning and literacy to MCC students, faculty and staff.

Services

The Language and Literacy Center offers ESL tutoring and academic coaching and support to MCC students who are learning English. Our resources and services are available to English learners at any level, whether they are enrolled in MCC credit or non-credit ESL programs or are taking general education or program-area courses. We also consult with faculty on issues related to English language acquisition.

Due to Covid-19, the Language and Literacy Center has moved its services online.

Language and Literacy Specialists are available to help students by email, phone, or Zoom video conferencing.

  • English grammar, reading, writing, listening, vocabulary, presentations, conversation, and pronunciation
  • Study skills, homework, and test preparation
  • College success skills, including online learning skills!

Activities

English Language and Academic Skills Support

English learners in any program can receive assistance in reading, writing, listening and speaking English. You can also get help with homework, study skills and test preparation.
Make an appointment for individualized, one-on-one assistance.

English Conversation Practice

Increase your confidence speaking and understanding English. You will also practice pronunciation and listening skills.
Make an appointment for friendly, informal conversation practice.

Academic and Career Planning

Learn about MCC’s academic and career programs, set goals, and create your academic plan. Find answers to all of your questions about being a student at MCC including how to register for courses, how to choose (or change) a major, and how to use MyWay.

Language and Literacy Center Goals

  • Provide students who are learning English with language support and academic coaching services

  • Collaborate with college faculty to integrate English language learner support into general education and program-area content

  • Encourage interactions among English learners and peers, staff and faculty to improve student engagement, learning and persistence

  • Facilitate transitions of ELLs from high school or noncredit ESL through credit ESL and developmental coursework to college-level coursework and to their career or transfer programs

  • Increase awareness of the nature of developing bilingualism and multilingualism and equip faculty with instructional techniques to support learning for students who are in the process of developing academic English proficiency
