Services

The Language and Literacy Center offers ESL tutoring, academic coaching, and homework and test-preparation help on a drop-in basis to MCC students who are learning English. Our resources and services are available to English learners at any level, whether they are enrolled in MCC's credit or non-credit ESL programs or are taking general education or program-area courses. We also consult with faculty on issues related to English language acquisition.

Join our Summer Reading Program to earn prizes for reading. Spend some time reading for fun this summer! Sign up in the LLC.

Academic and Career Planning

Discover MCC’s academic and career programs, learn how to set goals, and create your academic plan. Find answers to all of your questions about being a student at MCC. For all students. Facilitated by Veronica Castro, Enrollment Navigator.

English Conversation Group

Increase your confidence speaking and understanding English. Join us every week to discuss a different topic and share common experiences. You will also practice pronunciation and listening skills. Join the group at any time for friendly, informal conversation. For English learners. Facilitated by Melanie Seitzer, ESL and English Instructor.

Reading Center

Get personalized reading support, learn note taking methods and vocabulary strategies, and find help navigating and evaluating digital media and college databases. For all students. Facilitated by Kathy Rieken Gutshall, Reading Instructor.

Conversation Partners Program

Develop your English skills through one-on-one conversations with a fluent English speaker. Sign up in the LLC or online.

Language & Literacy Center Goals

  • Provide students who are learning English with language tutoring and academic support services

  • Collaborate with college faculty to integrate English language learner support into general education and program-area content

  • Encourage interactions among English learners and peers, staff, and faculty to improve student engagement, learning and persistence

  • Facilitate transitions of ELLs from high school or noncredit ESL through credit ESL and developmental coursework to college-level coursework and to their career or transfer programs

  • Increase awareness of the nature of developing bilingualism and multilingualism and equip faculty with instructional techniques to support learning for students who are in the process of developing academic English proficiency
