Assessment of New Students

New Student Skills Assessment
All students needing to take the placement examination are required to have a MCC Student Identification Number by going to and filling out an Automated Enrollment Application. Once completed, submitted and updated by MCC, an ID Number should be received in as little as two working days by email. All students taking tests are required to provide proof of identity by providing an actual non-expired/valid state/government (drivers license, passport, visa, etc.) or school issued MCC photo ID card (not an image, copy, printout, photograph or snap-shot).

Placement Testing: MCC testing staff administers an academic skills placement assessment free of charge to new students planning to attend Metropolitan Community College.
Depending on a students needs and requirements, a person will receive one of two (2) different types of the following assessments.
ACCUPLACER: This is a computerized assessment or placement test for both English and Math programs. These tests may be taken individually or together and students can either make an appointment or just do a walk-in at all testing locations. However, due to the limited seating at some testing locations, it is best to call ahead to see if an appointment is necessary. The average time to complete this test is two hours or less, however, it is not timed, so there is no actual time limit for taking it.
COMPANION: This placement test is given by appointment only at all testing locations and is only for persons needing DSS accommodations. To be eligible, students must have seen a DSS adviser for recommendation. This is a proportionally comparable written version of the ACCUPLACER assessment and is only for students with documented disabilities. This test comes in a Paper/Pencil version, but is also offered in large-print, braille and audio CD as well. Students may take the English and Math sections together, separately or not at all and there is no time limit for testing. Testing is done using a test booklet, answer sheet, scratch paper and a no. 2 Pencil. Calculators, however are not authorized for use when completing arithmetic and Elementary Algebra problems unless otherwise noted. COMPANION does not have a set time limit for test completion.

Test Preparation: Course placement is evaluated by the results of each students testing abilities in the areas of Math, Reading and occasionally Writing as well. Therefore to obtain a more valid and accurate skill placement, all students are encouraged to complete a review these and their academic skills prior to taking the placement exam. ACCUPLACER and COMPANION provide a free study application tailored to specifically help students become better prepared to test their best and can be found at this location online: https://accuplacerpractice.collegeboard.org/login. There are however a variety of other test-taking and/or study preparation resources available to use, so if you elect to use one of them, test preparation should only focus on reading comprehension and math portions of those ACCUPLACER preparation materials because MCC currently is not using the Sentence Skills test sections. If you have any questions about accessing the ACCUPLACER Study App, contact any MCC Learning and Tutoring Center for help.

ACCUPLACER/COMPANION Retakes: The ACCUPLACER and COMPANION can only be taken twice within any given two (2) year time period. To be eligible to take the examination a second time, students are required to speak with a MCC Adviser whom after reviewing initial scores can recommend, annotate and approve a students request or need for a retake. It is again recommended that all students brush up on their academic skills prior to taking or retaking an assessment.

Remote ACCUPLACER Testing: Students that are wanting to register for MCC courses but whom are unable to test at a MCC Testing Facility and need to take a placement examination first may be able to take the MCC ACCUPLACER assessment at other institutions that also use the ACCUPLACER Placement Testing network. For more information or help in scheduling a Remote ACCUPLACER Test, contact one of our Testing Facilities.

SmarterMeasure: SmarterMeasure is an optional assessment that measures learner readiness. It will help you prepare to be successful as a student. You are not penalized for guessing on SmarterMeasure, please enter an answer for each question on the assessment. Upon completion of SmarterMeasure you will receive a score report which will not only help you understand your strengths and opportunities for improvement, but will also provide resources to help you succeed. Remember, this assessment is strictly for your benefit. Take the time to rate yourself honestly. For more information, consult our SmarterMeasure page.

English as a Second Language (ESL)Student Assessments: If English is a students second language, the student must first meet with a MCC Academic Adviser or Counselor located in Student Services. This meeting is to decide which type of testing is required and the students individual needs and requirements. There are two (2) different assessments available for ESL students:
ACCUPLACER ESL: This is a computerized placement assessment program administered for English only. MCC uses the ESL Listening and ESL Reading Skills portions for English Course Placement. In some cases an ESL WritePlacer(an additional short writing sample) may be required as well if there is a question as to an understanding of a required skill set. This exam may be administrated by appointment or as a walk-in at all testing locations. However, due to the limited seating at some testing locations, it is best to call ahead to see if an appointment is necessary. The average time to complete this examination is approximately two hours, but it too is not timed, so there is no actual time limit for taking it. Practice tests for ACCUPLACER ESL are free.
COMPANION ESL: This placement test is given by appointment only at all testing locations and is only for persons needing DSS accommodations. To be eligible, students must have seen a DSS adviser for recommendation. This is a proportionally comparable written version of the ACCUPLACER English ESL assessment and is only for students with documented disabilities. This test not only comes in a paper/pencil version, but it is also offered in large-print, Braille, and audio-cd formats as well. Testing is done using a test booklet, answer sheet, scratch paper, and a no. 2 pencil. COMPANION ESL does not have a set time limit for test completion. Practice resources for the COMPANION ESL are free.

Placement Score Release Request Procedures: Students wishing their placement scores to be released to other educational institutions must follow the instructions on MCC's website.
