Credit For Work Experience

General Information

Assessment of documented work experience is the process of organizing and evaluating learning acquired outside of the classroom for the purpose of awarding college credit. Students who have acquired college-level learning through documented experiences present evidence to an evaluator who examines the student's knowledge and compares it to that acquired in regular MCC coursework. College credit is awarded if student knowledge is judged to be the equivalent to the course petitioned.

The student requesting work experience credit prepares a portfolio documenting his/her experiences and supporting the request for credit with appropriate evidence. The portfolio is a formal document that defines learning acquired through non-college experiences. The portfolio is an exercise in self-evaluation and requires the student to relate past learning experiences to current educational goals. Students must demonstrate the ability to organize documentation in an orderly and systematic manner. Clear, concise writing is essential.

Procedures

  • The student contacts the Campus Student Services or Career and Academic Skills Center on the Fort Omaha Campus to learn the requirements and procedures for requesting credit for work experience (must be currently enrolled).
  • The student is referred to the appropriate academic dean to discuss the guidelines for developing a portfolio.
  • The student obtains a copy of the course outline(s) from the dean’s associate for courses where work experience credit is desired.  
  • The student submits the completed portfolio to the appropriate academic dean’s office for review and decision regarding award of credit.
  • The student will be informed of the results of the review conducted by an academic dean.
  • The appropriate signed paperwork will be forwarded to the Records office for posting to the student's permanent record (official transcript). The portfolio will be kept in the academic dean’s office unless the student requests that it be returned.

Portfolio Preparation

Portfolio preparation is the structured experience of systematically collecting and organizing work experience for possible award to credit. The portfolio is part of the student's formal request for Credit Work Experience. The portfolio must contain all the documentation the student has prepared to support his/her request for credit.

The portfolio usually consists of the following sections:

  • Cover letter – a description of the course(s) for which credit is requested and a description of how the request for credit relates to educational and career goals.
  • Work experience narrative – a description of relevant work experiences as it relates to the request for credit.
  • Current resume
  • Documentation – this is the most important part of the portfolio. The documentation must be organized consistent with the course objectives of the MCC course outline. All relevant learning experiences must be detailed and appropriate evidence provided. See the following item on documentation for a complete description of documentation requirements.
  • Course Outline(s) – include a copy of the MCC course outline for all courses for which credit is being requested.

Documentation Requirements

The student must document how he/she met each of the objectives for the course. The documentation should include a description of the work experience relevant to each objective and may include descriptions of vendor, service or in-house training classes that are related. If the student has copies of certificates from the training classes, copies should be attached. The student should include examples of his/her work when possible. These will be returned to the student if requested.

The student must obtain a letter on company letterhead from his/her supervisor verifying work experience used as portfolio documentation.

Documentation of work experiences can take many forms. Documentation which is clearly related to and identified with course objectives is best. The following are examples of good documentation.

  • License supported by performance standards for acquiring the license
  • Samples of work produced, certificates of completion and grades obtained in service schools
  • Evidence of training undertaken and completed with description of objectives achieved and learning outcomes
  • Evaluation instruments and grades achieved in non-college courses and training
  • Books or articles published
  • Lectures given on specific subjects, with evaluations
  • Applicable portfolio(s) previously prepared
  • Documented and validated volunteer work

The following are examples of acceptable documentation, but evidence not as strong as listed above listed items.

  • Job descriptions
  • Promotion evaluations
  • Service schools attended, courses completed
  • Proposals written

Some learning experiences will be difficult to document, particularly if the experience was a long time ago, or if the organization providing the experience has closed and records are not available. In cases like this, it is better to concentrate on recent learning experiences that can be documented.

The focus of documentation should be on quality not quantity. A few pieces of strong documentation are much better than a box of incomplete and inappropriate evidence.

Limits

  • Credit for "Documented Work Experience" is only available for classes listed in the current college catalog.
  • Work experience credit is not available for any course for which a proficiency exam exists.
  • Credit earned through "Documented Work Experience" or "Course Proficiency Examinations" are generally not transferable to another institution on a course-by-course basis.

Academic deans may limit the number of courses for which an individual student may receive work experience credit.

If a course Proficiency Exam exists, work credit experience is not available.
