When a student expresses a behavior that concerns you—from outbursts in class to sudden, unexplained absences—counselors are available to help you determine how best to address the issue and can provide intervention and referrals to resources when warranted. Faculty and staff may contact any counselor for consultation but are encouraged to contact the counselor at the location most accessible for the student of concern:

Students in Crisis - Quick Guides

Referring a Student

In mild cases of distress, simply explaining advocacy services to the student and providing the contact information for the counselor at their main campus is an appropriate method of referral.

In more sensitive or worrisome cases, a more proactive and intrusive method of referral is warranted and the student’s name and contact information should be provided to a counselor for reach out. Students should be made aware that a counselor will be contacting them soon.

Crisis Situations 

In the event that a student is in an emotional crisis while on campus, Advocacy Counselors can provide intervention, assessment and support. Students in crisis should not be left alone until they are connected with a counselor. DSS Counselors can also assist in these situations if the Advocacy Counselor is unavailable. MCC College Police should be contacted outside of normal business hours or in cases or immediate danger.
