Noncredit Fashion Design Certificate

This program is designed for anyone interested in beginning a pathway to a career in fashion. If you are interested in pursuing a career in fashion or are currently enrolled in the MCC Fashion Design program, take four noncredit fashion design classes to receive a Noncredit Fashion Design Certificate and credit toward the MCC Fashion Design program. Class offerings

*Introduction to Apparel Draping
Discover the basics of draping apparel on a dress form. Using muslin students will learn to drape fabric in various techniques and complete a draped garment of their own design.

*Introduction to Apparel Sewing
Beginner sewers wanting to make your own clothes, here is your start. This class will teach you the basics of apparel sewing. Skills learned will be basic knowledge of apparel textiles, how to operate a sewing machine and serger, reading and cutting from a commercial pattern, and construction of a simple garment.

*Introduction to Apparel Sewing: Part II
Prerequisite: Introduction to Apparel Sewing or basic knowledge of apparel sewing.
Take the next step in learning apparel sewing. This intermediate class will work with a commercial pattern, learn to construct a basic collar, facings and interfacings, buttons and buttonholes, setting in simple sleeves and more. Students should have an understanding of how to operate a sewing machine and serger.

*Introduction to Flat Pattern
Learn the basics of making custom apparel patterns through the flat pattern method. Students will drape a basic garment or sloper and learn to transfer it to paper to to be used as the building block for all flat pattern drafting.

*Introduction to Flat Pattern II
Prerequisite: Introduction to Flat Pattern
Continue to build on your flat pattern skill learned in Intro to Flat Pattern I. Explore the basics of manipulating the sloper to create custom bodice designs, sleeves, skirts, collars and more.

*Apparel Sewing Lab
Prerequisite: Flat Pattern or Apparel Sewing
For the advanced sewer who would like guidance on their projects, this lab is for you. Build on skills learned in Flat Pattern classes or advance your apparel sewing skills. The instructor will guide you through the projects of your choice.

*Bottoms Up: Pant Sewing Techniques
Making pants can be tricky. In this class students will construct a basic pair of trousers. Concepts learned will be pockets, fly zipper construction, belt loops, fitting and more. Students will be asked to purchase fabric and materials based on instructors guidelines.
