Mr. David M. Rice and his lifetime partner, Ephraim L. Marks, have been pioneers in the Nebraska gay rights movement.

To honor their belief that education is key to opportunity and success, this scholarship has been established to help ensure that all students have the resources to pursue their lifetime goals through further education.

This scholarship is intended to serve as a second chance award for students 22 years of age or older, to assist first-time students who have been out of the formal education system for a period of time and are returning to begin working toward their educational goals. It is specifically designed to support students in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual community.

The scholarship will be awarded in equal payments for four quarters, up to the equivalent of 20 credit hours. To remain eligible for the scholarship, selected recipients are required to remain in good academic standing and meet with an academic advisor at least once quarterly to review academic progress.

Scholarship may be used for tuition and fees.

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Financial need is required
  • Full- or part-time student
  • First-time student
  • Students must have a 2.5 GPA or above at the time of the application that must be maintained during the scholarship
  • Student must be over 22 years of age
