Communication

What is 'Communication? (COMS)'

Courses in this area focus on developing oral communication skills by studying communication theory and then practicing these vital skills. Courses include Public Speaking, Small Group Communication, Interpersonal Communication and Argumentation & Debate. At some colleges and universities, this area is referred to as Communication Studies, but these skills were traditionally studied under the heading of Rhetoric.

Is it for you?

Any student who expects to interact with others in their educational, personal or business life will benefit from these courses. Oral communication skills are routinely listed by employers as one of their top requirements, across job fields and disciplines. Our courses give students not only the opportunity to learn information about the skills employers demand, but also a non-threatening place to practice those skills.

Jobs and Salary expectations

Effective communication skills are vital to any job, but several jobs rely heavily on effective communication skills. Those jobs include advertising, communication educator, electronic media/radio-television broadcasting, print or electronic journalism, public relations and theatre and the performing and dramatic arts. Salaries will vary widely in these fields, but one cannot put a price on effective communication skills – in any field.
