What IS THE Plumbing Apprenticeship Program (ARPAO)?

The Plumbing Apprenticeship program prepares students to become licensed plumbers. All instructors are licensed journeyman or master plumbers. Courses include lecture and hands-on lab instruction under close supervision of the instructors. After completing the Plumbing Apprenticeship program and the required on-the-job training period (four years verifiable experience), the student may apply to take the examination for the Journeyman's Plumbing License administered by the City of Omaha.

Metropolitan Community College's Plumbing Apprenticeship program is divided into four years with first, second and third years consisting of three quarters and the fourth year consisting of two quarters. Courses are offered in the evening.

It is highly recommended that work experience and the apprenticeship program be done concurrently.

Program Descriptions

  • Plumbing IA - This course is an introduction to the plumbing trade for plumbing apprentices. The course covers the history of plumbing along with the commonly used materials, tools and equipment. The apprentice is introduced to the math used in plumbing trade. Prerequisite - None

  • Plumbing IB - This course is a continuation of the introductory material covered in Plumbing IA. The apprentice continues working on math for the plumbing trade. Prerequisite - Plumbing IA

  • Plumbing IC - This course is a continuation of basic math and plumber's math. Students become familiar with product information. Prerequisite - Plumbing IB

  • Plumbing IIA - This course covers the sizing and design of water, waste and vent systems in residential applications using MUD and Omaha Plumbing Code rules. The student becomes familiar with residential blueprints and isometric drawings used in residential applications. Prerequisite - Plumbing IC

  • Plumbing IIB - This course provides a better understanding of the Omaha Plumbing Code and using the knowledge acquired, students apply the code requirements to field work and lab projects. The student continues to gain proficiency using plumbing math. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIA

  • Plumbing IIC - This course covers customer service along with troubleshooting and repair of residential plumbing systems. Water, closet, faucet, water heater and water conditioning systems are covered. Proper operation of drain cleaning machines and cameras are included. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIB

  • Plumbing IIIA - This course develops proficiency in the use of the Omaha Plumbing Code. The course continues with the design and installation of grain, waste and vent systems, water supply systems and storm drainage systems. The student also gains a working knowledge of the differences between the Omaha Plumbing Code and the Uniform Plumbing Code. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIC

  • Plumbing IIIB - This course covers the design and installation of public and private sewage systems, medical gas piping systems and irrigation systems. The course also covers MUD regulations for water, gas and vent piping systems for gas appliances. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIIA

  • Plumbing IIIC - This course is designed to help a plumbing apprentice gain the basic knowledge needed to read blueprints, create shop drawings and make isometric illustrations of a plumbing system. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIIB

  • Plumbing IVA - This course continues the interpretation and application of the Omaha Plumbing Code in the design of plumbing systems. The course covers installation procedures for various plumbing systems, including water conditioning and swimming pools. Commercial blueprints are covered. Prerequisite - Plumbing IIIC

  • Plumbing IVB - This course is a review of the Omaha Plumbing Code, job site safety and math skills required for the plumbing trade. Through review and application of classroom studies, the apprentice is prepared to successfully take the journeyman plumber's test. Prerequisite - Plumbing IVA
