MCC receives 2021 Business Excellence Award from Greater Omaha Chamber

OMAHA, Neb. — Metropolitan Community College has been named a recipient of a Greater Omaha Chamber 2021 Business Excellence Award in the philanthropy category. MCC was selected due to its contribution in creating thousands of face shields for area hospital workers when the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic struck Omaha in spring 2020.

In March 2020, the College converted its Center for Advanced and Emerging Technology into a face shield assembly plant. Dozens of college employees worked to create vital PPE equipment by using the Prototype Design Lab, as well as other means to produce the face shields that were in short supply. Eventually, more than 10,000 would be delivered to Omaha area hospitals.

The award comes as part of an annual tradition recognizing area organizations in each of four categories: Leadership, Innovation, Philanthropy and Sustained Excellence. More than 70 organizations were nominated for this year’s awards, with just 25 identified as award recipients, “trailblazers who go above-and-beyond every day,” according to event organizers.

“Businesses are vital to thriving communities – catalyzing innovation, creating jobs and building connections. We like to say ‘excellence is earned, not given;’ and that’s true of the 25 organizations we honor today. These organizations are beyond excellent. They are exceptional,” said David G. Brown, president and CEO, Greater Omaha Chamber.
