Writing Center

Welcome to the Writing Center at MCC

The Writing Center is made up of English language and English language learning teachers who call themselves Writing Consultants. We are committed to providing writing encouragement to students, faculty, and community members. We like working with writers who are learning about any subject, whether that is for school or personal life. We especially welcome people who are and have been historically unwelcomed in academic spaces. Essentially, the Writing Center strives to be a safe and brave place for writers to get together to talk about writing and ideas.

Our Philosophy

Students, faculty, and community members are invited to share their written work with us. We assist writers with everything from brainstorming to proofreading. Our goals include being there alongside you while you are exploring language, developing voice, gaining confidence, determining how to interpret and thoroughly answer assignment questions, and taking creative liberty within the confines of academia. Sometimes writers simply need an audience, and we’re happy to listen to you read as well. Ideally, we’re here to understand how you like to think and write and make more of that happen in your schoolwork.

Aside from one-on-one appointments, we are able to help with navigating Canvas, like learning how to digitally submit assignments for example. We also provide generative workshops on academic and creative topics, as well as offer handouts on academic subjects, like how to research and cite sources, among many others. Furthermore, for faculty, we offer several outreach programs, such as writing center orientation sessions and tours for their classes.

Ultimately, our goals include working together to realize the power of the written word inside and outside of the classroom, and, just as importantly, making academia more accessible.
