Media alert: New MCC Do School provides safe, engaging environment for K-8 students

What: In collaboration with Do Space and local school districts, Metropolitan Community College’s Do School is wrapping up a successful semester this week. Born as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Do School’s mission is to provide a safe and sanitary space for students that maintains their continuity of learning; and to connect students with resources and opportunities that provide them with the support needed to stay on track academically. With the help of principals and staff from Howard Kennedy Elementary School, King Science Magnet Middle School and Westbrook Elementary School, at-risk students from the schools were identified for enrollment.

“The pandemic created an unprecedented education crisis that forced school systems to transition to online learning. We wanted to help students who did not have access to technology at home by creating a learning environment for them to stay on track,” said Gary Girard, MCC Continuing Education director. “Many of our Do School students come from families where their parents are essential workers and haven’t been able to work from home. We also couldn't have done this without the support of Do Space and area school districts.”

When: Dec. 15-18, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Where: MCC at Do Space, 72nd and Dodge streets.

Do School is also offered at MCC North Express in the Highlander neighborhood as well, but classes have ended for the semester at the location before beginning again Jan. 4.

Please contact MCC Public and Media Relations manager Derek Rayment at 402-960-0697 before coming.

Background: Safety protocols have also been in place, requiring masks, consistent sanitation and advanced cleaning methods, social distancing precautions and other health measures have contributed to a positive learning environment.
