Media alert: MCC will host National History Day district competition tomorrow
What: More than 300 area middle school and high school students from Douglas and Sarpy counties will present historical findings through exhibits, live performances, documentaries, essays and websites tomorrow at Metropolitan Community College. It’s part of a district competition for National History Day, a nonprofit that creates opportunities for students to engage in historical research.
When: Friday, March 6 from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Where: South Omaha Campus, 2909 Edward Babe Gomez Ave. The competition will take place throughout campus, in the halls and in room 120 of the Industrial Training Center.
Background: Students will be tasked with analyzing and interpreting original research pertaining to this year’s theme, “Breaking Barriers in History.” Examples of competition entries include the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Rights Movement, the Cold War, Americans with Disabilities Act and more.
The top three winners from each category will advance to the state competition at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska in April. Special MCC NHD awards will be given by the Czech and Slovak Museum, the Great Plains Black History Museum and the Morman Winter Quarters Museum.
