During Black History Month, Metropolitan Community College is hosting several free events that celebrate the impact of Black history, culture and leadership in our community.

Panel Discussion: “Beyond the Step Show: Our History Is the Foundation – Never the Finish Line”

This powerful program explores how Black leadership is evolving in the 21st century, challenging stereotypes, reimagining influence, innovation and impact

Presentation: “Learning from Gordon Parks” with Ann Dean

Thursday, Feb. 5 | 3 p.m.

This inspiring presentation by Ann Dean explores how Gordon Parks used his camera as a weapon against injustice — and how his work continues to influence generations of storytellers and changemakers. Dean is a travel photographer and instructor at the Lawrence Art Center in Lawrence, Kansas.

Lecture: “Keeping the Flame Lit: The Importance of Telling Our History” with Maurice Hobson, Ph.D.

Explore why preserving and sharing Black history is essential to shaping our collective future. Maurice Hobson, Ph.D., is a professor and chair of Africana Studies at Georgia State University.

Dialogue: “Growing Up Sayers: A Black History Conversation with Mr. Roger Sayers” moderated by Rev. Brandon Walker

Join Rev. Brandon Walker for an engaging conversation with Roger Sayers, the University of Nebraska Omaha Hall of Fame track and football star, and older brother of NFL legend Gale Sayers. Roger Sayers will share stories and insights from his life.
